CHAPTER 17 — The Last Keeper

# CHAPTER 17 — The Last Keeper

No one spoke.

Not for several long seconds.

Sister Catherine's words lingered in the room like a whisper that refused to fade.

"The last Keeper has been watching over you since the day you were born."

Sofia stared at her.

"Who is she?"

The elderly nun looked down at the brass key resting in Sofia's palm.

"Her name..."

"...is Eleanor Hayes."

Marco frowned.

"I've never heard that name."

"You weren't supposed to."

---

Alexander leaned forward.

"Where is she now?"

Sister Catherine hesitated.

"I don't know."

Silence.

"But I know where she wanted us to meet if this day ever came."

She reached into the satchel again.

This time she removed an old postcard.

The picture showed a weathered lighthouse standing alone on a rocky coastline.

Across the back, written in faded ink:

Cape Mercy Lighthouse

October 14

Sunrise

No year.

No explanation.

Only those three words.

---

Evelyn immediately recognized it.

"Oh no..."

Alexander looked at her.

"What?"

"The lighthouse belonged to Isabella's uncle."

Marco nodded slowly.

"I remember visiting once when I was a child."

"It was abandoned years ago."

Sister Catherine shook her head.

"No."

"It only appeared abandoned."

---

At that exact moment...

Across the street...

The black SUV remained parked beneath a row of maple trees.

Inside, a young man lowered a pair of binoculars.

"They're leaving soon."

The driver spoke into an encrypted phone.

"Target Catherine confirmed."

A calm female voice answered.

"Do not engage."

"We need the Keeper."

"What about Sofia?"

A pause.

"If necessary..."

"...bring her too."

---

The next morning...

Before sunrise...

Alexander's SUV traveled north along the empty coastline.

Fog rolled across the cliffs.

The ocean crashed against the rocks below.

The farther they drove...

The fewer signs of civilization remained.

Finally...

The lighthouse appeared.

Old.

White.

Weather-beaten.

Standing alone against the gray sea.

---

The front door stood slightly open.

Alexander instinctively stepped in front of Sofia.

"Stay behind me."

Inside...

Dust covered the wooden floor.

Old lanterns lined the walls.

Everything looked untouched.

Then...

A voice echoed from above.

"I was beginning to think you'd never come."

Everyone looked up.

Standing at the top of the spiral staircase...

Was an elderly woman with silver hair tied neatly behind her head.

She wore a simple navy coat.

No jewelry.

No sign of wealth.

Only calm confidence.

---

Sister Catherine smiled.

"Eleanor."

The old woman slowly descended the stairs.

Every movement was deliberate.

When she reached Sofia...

She stopped.

Her eyes softened.

"You have Isabella's smile."

Sofia felt tears rising again.

"You knew my mother?"

Eleanor smiled sadly.

"I held you the day you were born."

---

Marco stared in disbelief.

"You were there?"

"I delivered you into your father's arms."

Marco's knees nearly gave out.

"I thought..."

"...everyone disappeared."

Eleanor shook her head.

"Not everyone."

---

Alexander watched her carefully.

"You're the Keeper."

She nodded once.

"For forty-three years."

"And now..."

"My time is almost over."

---

She walked toward the old lantern hanging in the center of the room.

Then reached underneath its iron base.

A hidden compartment quietly opened.

Inside rested...

A thin leather notebook.

Far smaller than the Founder's Charter.

Across its cover were embossed two simple words:

Article XIII

Alexander's pulse quickened.

"This is it."

Eleanor did not hand it over.

Not yet.

Instead...

She looked directly at Sofia.

"Before you read this..."

"You deserve to know why the Council feared it."

---

The room became completely silent.

"The first twelve articles created the Council."

She gently rested her hand on the notebook.

"But the thirteenth article..."

"...gave someone the power to destroy it."

Marco frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Eleanor opened the notebook to the final page.

At the bottom...

Every Founder had signed.

Including Eduardo Velasco.

Including Marco's grandfather.

And beneath the signatures...

One final clause.

---

"If the Council is ever used for personal power rather than the protection of innocent families..."

"The Keeper shall have absolute authority to dissolve the Council, seize its assets, expose every member, and transfer all remaining resources to the victims."

Alexander stared at the page.

"They buried this."

Eleanor nodded.

"Carmen made sure no member ever saw it."

---

Sofia looked confused.

"But if you had this all along..."

"Why didn't you stop them years ago?"

For the first time...

Eleanor looked heartbroken.

"Because the Charter required one impossible condition."

"What condition?"

She closed the notebook.

"The bloodline of Isabella Marino had to survive."

Everyone froze.

Alexander slowly turned toward Sofia.

"So..."

Eleanor smiled.

"You were never just a victim."

"You were the final key."

---

Before anyone could speak again—

BANG!

The lighthouse windows shattered.

Gunfire echoed through the tower.

Alexander immediately pulled Sofia behind a stone pillar.

Marco grabbed Sister Catherine.

Glass exploded across the wooden floor.

Outside...

Four black SUVs surrounded the lighthouse.

Men in tactical gear poured onto the cliffs.

One voice boomed through a loudspeaker.

"Hand over the Keeper..."

"...and the girl."

Eleanor quietly closed the notebook.

Then looked at Alexander with surprising calm.

"They're too late."

Alexander frowned.

"What?"

She gently placed Article XIII into Sofia's hands.

"The Keeper has just chosen her successor."

Outside...

The attackers began forcing the front door.

Inside...

Sofia stood frozen.

Holding the one document powerful enough to erase the last remnants of the Council forever.

And for the first time...

May you like

She understood that this fight was never only about discovering her past.

It was about deciding the future of every family the Council had ever tried to control.
