Chapter 5 – A Mother's Confession

Margaret sat alone in an interrogation room.

For hours she said nothing.

Then Detective Rachel entered carrying a thick folder.

She placed the evidence on the table one piece at a time.

The forged legal documents.

The medication logs.

The hidden recordings.

The rehabilitation reports.

Finally, the photograph of the emerald brooch.

Margaret's confident expression began to fade.

Rachel spoke calmly.

"You spent years trying to convince everyone Ava was helpless."

No response.

"You isolated her."

Still silence.

"You controlled her medication."

Margaret looked away.

Then Rachel slid one final item across the table.

A family photograph.

Ethan and Ava smiling on their wedding day.

Rachel asked quietly,

"Why?"

For the first time, Margaret's shoulders slumped.

"I built this family."

Her voice trembled with something between pride and regret.

"My husband left everything to Ethan."

She looked at the photograph.

"And then Ethan chose her."

Rachel remained silent.

Margaret laughed bitterly.

"I wasn't going to lose everything to an outsider."

Tears finally appeared in her eyes.

"I only wanted time... enough time to convince Ethan she wasn't capable."

Rachel closed the folder.

"But somewhere along the way..."

Margaret whispered the answer herself.

"I stopped seeing her as a person."

Outside the interrogation room, Ethan stood frozen, having heard every word through the observation window.

The woman who had raised him had finally confessed.

But Rachel knew the case was far from over.

The investigation into the car crash had just uncovered a new witness—someone everyone believed had died years ago.
