Chapter 7 – The Man Behind the Cover-Up

The damaged brake fitting was sent to the state crime laboratory.
Three anxious days later, the results arrived.
Rachel read the report twice.
There was no doubt.
The metal had been cleanly severed with a specialized cutting tool before the crash.
Someone had sabotaged Ava's vehicle.
Rachel immediately reopened every file connected to the original investigation.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Former Detective Victor Sloan.
He had declared the crash an accident within forty-eight hours.
When officers went to question him, they discovered he had retired six months earlier.
Rachel eventually found him living alone in a quiet coastal town.
Victor looked exhausted before she spoke a single word.
"I've been expecting someone."
Rachel placed the laboratory report on the table.
"You buried evidence."
Victor lowered his head.
"I know."
"Why?"
His hands trembled.
"Margaret Harrington offered me enough money to pay for my wife's cancer treatment."
Rachel remained silent.
"I told myself it was only paperwork. That no one would ever know."
He closed his eyes.
"But every night I remembered Ava trapped inside that crushed car."
Tears rolled down his face.
"I've regretted it ever since."
Victor opened an old filing cabinet and removed a sealed envelope.
"I kept copies."
Inside were photographs never submitted to the court.
One image showed unmistakable tool marks on the brake assembly.
Another showed Margaret standing near Ava's vehicle only minutes before she left the estate.

Rachel carefully collected the evidence.
The truth had survived because one guilty man could never completely bury his conscience.
