Chapter 6 – The Woman Everyone Thought Was Dead
The call came just after sunrise.
Detective Rachel Morgan stared at the case file in disbelief before answering.
"This is Morgan."
A calm voice replied.
"I have information about Ava Harrington's accident."
Rachel reached for her notebook.
"Who is this?"
"My name is Grace Nolan."
The line fell silent for a heartbeat.
"I was the paramedic who arrived first at the crash."
Rachel frowned.
"Your report says you passed away three years ago."
"I left the state under witness protection after testifying in an organized crime case. My records were sealed. But I never forgot what I saw that night."
Within hours, Grace sat across from Rachel in a private interview room.
She slid a weathered notebook onto the table.
"I keep notes after every serious accident. It helps me remember details."
Rachel opened it carefully.
One page was marked with the date of Ava's crash.
Grace pointed to a sentence.
"Victim repeatedly whispered, 'The brakes... someone touched the brakes.'"
Rachel looked up.
"Was she conscious?"
"Barely."
"Why wasn't this in the official report?"
Grace sighed.
"Because another officer said the victim was confused from head trauma. He told me not to include it."
Rachel's expression hardened.
Grace continued.
"There was something else."
She reached into her purse and placed a small evidence envelope on the table.
Inside was a damaged brake line fitting.
"I found it near the wreck. It looked like it had been cut. I kept it because something felt wrong."
Rachel's pulse quickened.
The investigation had just crossed a terrifying line.
