the little girl whispered “follow me” to the mafia boss, and led him to the secret that would destroy his own family

CHAPTER 2 – THE NAMES INSIDE THE FLASH DRIVE
“My name is Lily,” the little girl said quietly.
“Lily Bennett.”
The last name hit Tristan harder than a bullet.
He looked at the trembling boy, then back at the girl.
“Thomas Bennett was your father?”
Lily nodded once.
“He told us if anything happened to him, we had to wait for a man named Tristan Vail.”
For a long second, nobody spoke.
Somewhere above them, heavy footsteps echoed through the abandoned building.
The hunters were still searching.
But Tristan's attention never left the two children.
Thomas Bennett had worked for the Vail Organization for almost twelve years. He had handled taxes, shell companies, payroll records, and international transfers. He was the kind of man nobody noticed because he never wanted to be noticed.
Quiet men usually survived longest.
Until they learned something they were never supposed to see.
“When did your father die?” Tristan asked.
Lily lowered her eyes.
“They killed him.”
The answer came without hesitation.
“The police said he... did it himself,” Tristan replied.
“They lied.”
“No.”
“They made them lie.”
Her tiny hands tightened around the edge of the blanket.
“I heard everything.”
The room suddenly felt much smaller.
“My dad wasn't supposed to come home that night,” Lily continued. “He forgot his wallet.”
She swallowed.
“When he opened the apartment door... there were three men inside.”
Tristan listened without blinking.
“One of them was Uncle Marcus.”
His heartbeat stopped.
Not figuratively.
Actually stopped.
Marcus Doyle.
The cousin who had raised a glass at Thomas Bennett's retirement dinner.
The cousin who had personally arranged tonight's meeting.
The cousin who supposedly wanted to expose a traitor.
Lily's voice shook.
“My dad said, 'Please... my children are sleeping.'”
She closed her eyes as if the memory hurt.
“Marcus said... 'That's exactly why you should've kept your mouth shut.'”
Silence swallowed the room.
Even Eli had stopped coughing.
Tristan slowly stood.
His hands curled into fists so tight his knuckles turned white.
Marcus.
Not Kane.
Not some outside enemy.
Marcus.
He plugged the flash drive into the encrypted phone hidden inside his coat.
The screen remained black for two seconds.
Then a password prompt appeared.
Below it was a single sentence.
If you are reading this, I am already dead.
Thomas Bennett.
Tristan entered his birthday.
Wrong password.
He tried Thomas's birthday.
Wrong again.
Lily suddenly spoke.
“My dad said if you ever smiled... it was because of your mother.”
Tristan froze.
Only four people had known that.
He slowly typed his mother's maiden name.
Margaret Ashcroft.
The phone unlocked.
A folder appeared.
PROJECT FALLEN KING.
His stomach tightened.
Inside were hundreds of files.
Bank transfers.
Photos.
Recorded phone calls.
Shipping manifests.
Security schedules.
Wire transfers totaling over four hundred million dollars.
Each document connected the same names.
Marcus Doyle.
Reece Callahan.
Three captains.
Two judges.
A senator.
Four FBI agents.
And someone identified only as...
ARCHITECT.
Every payment stretched back nearly six years.
Six years.
The betrayal hadn't started recently.
It had been growing inside his own family while he believed they were building an empire together.
Then he opened the final file.
A video.
Thomas Bennett appeared on-screen.
His face looked exhausted.
He hadn't shaved in days.
He kept looking over his shoulder.
“If this recording reaches you,” Thomas said, “then Marcus finally decided I knew too much.”
He took a slow breath.
“You've spent years believing Vincent Kane is your greatest enemy.”
“You're wrong.”
“Kane is only buying what Marcus is selling.”
Tristan's jaw tightened.
Thomas continued.
“The real plan isn't to steal your business.”
“They want your name.”
“They want every captain loyal to believe you betrayed them first.”
Another pause.
“They're preparing a massacre.”
Tristan's pulse pounded.
“The meeting at Blackwood Heights isn't an ambush.”
“It's bait.”
“They never expected to kill you there.”
“They only needed proof that you disappeared.”
“So tomorrow morning... Marcus can tell everyone Kane kidnapped you.”
“And while your loyal captains search the city... Marcus will execute every family still loyal to your bloodline.”
The recording ended.
The room fell silent.
Then another file automatically opened.
A blueprint.
Tristan recognized it instantly.
Vail Manor.
His Long Island estate.
Every entrance.
Every security blind spot.
Every panic room.
Someone had highlighted tomorrow night's charity gala.
More than three hundred guests.
Politicians.
Business leaders.
Foreign investors.
His aunt.
His uncle.
His cousins.
Children.
The blueprint marked eight sniper positions in red.
Another page listed explosives hidden beneath the ballroom.
The estimated casualties were written neatly in black ink.
241–318 expected fatalities.
Tristan felt cold spread through his entire body.
This wasn't revenge.
It was extermination.
A metallic clang echoed through the basement corridor.
Everyone looked toward the steel door.
Another clang.
Closer.
Someone was opening doors one by one.
Searching.
Lily grabbed Eli's hand.
“They found us.”
Heavy boots echoed outside.
A flashlight beam slid beneath the crack under the door.
One man.
Then another.
Voices.
“I checked every floor.”
“They've got to be down here.”
Reece Callahan.
Tristan recognized him instantly.
The same man who had once called him brother.
The doorknob turned.
Locked.
A fist slammed against the steel.
“Open it!”
Silence.
Another crash.
The hinges rattled.
“They're inside,” another voice growled.
“Break it.”
A shotgun blast exploded through the corridor.
The steel door bent inward.
Dust filled the room.
Eli screamed.
Lily threw herself over her little brother.
Tristan calmly reached beneath his coat.
For the first time that night...
He drew his Glock.
Not with anger.
Not with panic.
With absolute certainty.
His blue eyes became ice.
The men outside still believed they were hunting a wounded king.
May you like
They had no idea they had just cornered the most dangerous man in New York.
And Tristan Vail had decided that no one who threatened those two children would leave the basement alive.
