CHAPTER 8 – THE FINAL CHOICE

CHAPTER 8 – THE FINAL CHOICE
Chaos erupted.
Some of Marcus's men surrendered immediately.
Others opened fire.
The ballroom exploded into violence.
Tristan raced toward his grandmother.
A masked gunman blocked his path.
Architect.
For the first time, they stood face to face.
Architect removed his mask.
He wasn't a legendary crime lord.
He wasn't a politician.
He wasn't even someone Tristan recognized.
He was an elderly businessman with kind gray eyes.
"My name doesn't matter," he said calmly.
"It never has."
"You murdered my father."
Architect smiled.
"I merely gave ambitious men permission to betray him."
He slowly pulled a detonator from his pocket.
"Empires always destroy themselves."
"You simply needed a push."
Before he could press the button—
A gunshot rang out.
Sophia.
The bullet struck the detonator, shattering it in Architect's hand.
A second shot hit his shoulder.
Marcus saw everything unraveling around him.
Police flooded the mansion.
His captains turned against him.
Architect was wounded.
His empire had lasted less than one hour.
With nowhere left to run, Marcus pointed a pistol at Tristan.
"I should've killed you when you were seventeen."
Tristan looked at the man he had called family for fourteen years.
"You already did."
Marcus fired.
Thomas stepped between them.
The bullet struck his chest.
"No!"
Lily screamed.
Tristan caught Thomas as he collapsed.
Thomas smiled weakly.
"You trusted people..."
"...because your father taught you to."
"Don't let Marcus change that."
With his final breath, Thomas looked at his children.
"I love you."
His hand fell still.
Marcus tried to escape through the rear gardens.
He never made it.
The captains he had betrayed surrounded him.
No one spoke.
No one raised a weapon.
They simply stepped aside as federal agents placed him in handcuffs.
For the first time in his life...
Marcus Doyle looked afraid.
EPILOGUE – A DIFFERENT LEGACY
One year later.
The Vail estate looked different.
The armed checkpoints were gone.
The illegal businesses had been dismantled.
Most of the organization's legitimate companies had been reorganized under lawful management.
Tristan testified against corrupt officials, accepting responsibility for the crimes committed under his leadership while helping dismantle the criminal network from within. His cooperation became a turning point in ending the empire built on betrayal.
Lily and Eli were no longer hiding in abandoned buildings.
Eli's asthma was under control.
He laughed more than he coughed.
Lily attended school for the first time without wondering whether someone would come to kill her family.
One spring afternoon, the three of them visited Thomas Bennett's grave.
Eli placed a small toy car beside the headstone.
Lily laid down a single red rubber band—the one she had worn the night everything changed.
Tristan remained silent for a long time.
Finally, Lily slipped her hand into his.
"You kept your promise."
He looked down.
"What promise?"
"You said no one would ever hurt us again."
Tristan smiled.
A genuine smile.
The kind his mother had once said made him look like the little boy he used to be.
"I had help."
Lily nodded.
"We all did."
As they walked away together, the afternoon sun broke through the clouds.
The empire Tristan had inherited was gone.
In its place stood something his father had always hoped for but never lived to see:
Not a kingdom built on fear—
May you like
but a family rebuilt on truth, courage, and the choice to protect one another.
