CHAPTER 7 – THE KING WALKS INTO THE TRAP

CHAPTER 7 – THE KING WALKS INTO THE TRAP
No one in the warehouse spoke.
The live video of Tristan's grandmother flickered across the wall.
Behind her stood the masked man with the silver phoenix tie clip.
Architect.
The invisible hand behind decades of bloodshed.
Thomas stepped forward.
"Don't go."
"It's exactly what they want."
Tristan never looked away from the screen.
"If I don't..."
"My grandmother dies."
Thomas's voice hardened.
"If you go alone, everyone dies."
Lily quietly reached into her torn denim jacket.
"There was something else."
She handed Tristan a folded piece of paper that had been sewn into the lining of the jacket.
"My dad hid it."
Inside was a handwritten note.
Trust the one Marcus fears. Not the one Marcus trusts.
Below the sentence was a single name.
Sophia Moretti.
Tristan's eyes widened.
Sophia Moretti had once been the daughter of his father's greatest rival. Years ago, she had disappeared from New York after refusing to join either crime family. Rumors claimed she was dead.
Thomas nodded.
"She's alive."
"And she's been hunting Architect longer than any of us."
Almost on cue, footsteps echoed from the warehouse entrance.
Several guards raised their weapons.
A woman's calm voice cut through the tension.
"If you're pointing guns at me, at least have the courtesy to aim straight."
A tall woman in a charcoal trench coat walked into the warehouse.
Silver streaks ran through her dark hair, and a scar crossed her left eyebrow.
Sophia Moretti.
She looked directly at Tristan.
"Marcus thinks you're emotional enough to walk into his trap."
She placed a tablet on the table.
"So let's disappoint him."
Within twenty minutes, a plan was in motion.
Marcus expected Tristan to arrive alone at Vail Manor.
He would.
But not in the way Marcus imagined.
Sophia had spent years building a network inside the city's surveillance system. Every camera around the estate had already been compromised.
Thomas's people shut down Marcus's communications.
Warehouse workers disguised as catering staff quietly entered the mansion.
Former drivers replaced getaway vehicles.
Electricians cut power to Marcus's emergency escape tunnel.
No soldiers.
No army.
Just ordinary people who had decided they were finished being invisible.
As midnight approached, Tristan drove alone through the gates of Vail Manor.
Marcus watched from the balcony and smiled.
"I knew you'd come."
Tristan stepped from the car, unarmed.
"You wanted me."
"I'm here."
Marcus slowly applauded.
"My cousin."
"You've always been predictable."
He gestured toward the ballroom.
More than fifty armed men emerged from the shadows.
Snipers appeared on rooftops.
Lasers settled across Tristan's chest.
Marcus laughed.
"You've already lost."
Tristan smiled for the first time that night.
"No."
"You already have."
The mansion lights suddenly went dark.
Every security monitor inside the estate switched to the same image.
A copy of Thomas Bennett's files.
Every payment.
Every murder.
Every betrayal.
Every captain stared at the screens.
Marcus's face drained of color.
"What did you do?"
Tristan answered quietly.
"I told them the truth."
Then another voice echoed through the ballroom.
"Federal agents!"
"Nobody move!"
Dozens of tactical officers stormed through every entrance.

Sophia had spent years secretly feeding evidence to a small anti-corruption task force that Marcus never knew existed.
The empire Marcus had built collapsed in less than sixty seconds.
