CHAPTER 4 – THE GHOST WHO REFUSED TO DIE

CHAPTER 4 – THE GHOST WHO REFUSED TO DIE

The forgotten maintenance tunnel stretched beneath Blackwood Heights like the veins of a dead city.

Water dripped steadily from cracked pipes.

Old electrical cables hung from the ceiling.

Lily led the way with surprising confidence.

"My dad found this place years ago," she whispered.

"He said every old building has a way out."

Behind them came distant shouting.

"They're in the basement!"

"Split up!"

"Search the tunnels!"

They had less than five minutes.

Maybe less.

After nearly three hundred yards, the tunnel ended beneath a rusted service hatch.

Tristan pushed.

It didn't move.

Rust had welded it shut.

He pushed harder.

Nothing.

Then Lily quietly pointed upward.

"There's a lock."

Tristan looked carefully.

She was right.

A heavy chain secured the hatch from above.

Someone had discovered the escape route.

Someone had planned ahead.

Marcus again.

Every path had been anticipated.

Every exit closed.

The realization settled heavily inside him.

Marcus hadn't simply betrayed him.

Marcus had spent years learning exactly how Tristan thought.

A metallic scrape echoed from behind.

Flashlights.

"They're coming!"

Tristan examined the tunnel.

No cover.

No alternate exit.

No chance of winning a prolonged gunfight while carrying Eli.

Then he noticed something half-hidden beneath years of dust.

An old maintenance map.

Gas lines.

Steam valves.

Pressure controls.

His eyes stopped on one label.

Emergency Boiler Release.

He smiled.

A dangerous smile.

"Lily."

"Yes?"

"When I say close your eyes..."

She immediately understood.

She didn't ask questions.

Tristan pulled the ancient release lever with all his strength.

For one heartbeat...

Nothing happened.

Then the tunnel exploded with deafening force.

Scalding steam burst through dozens of cracked pipes.

Visibility vanished instantly.

Men screamed.

Flashlights disappeared inside the white cloud.

Chaos erupted.

"They're shooting!"

"I can't see!"

"My eyes!"

Gunfire echoed wildly as Marcus's men accidentally fired at each other.

Tristan moved through the steam like a ghost.

One man stumbled directly toward him.

A single strike sent him unconscious.

Another blindly fired into the fog.

Tristan disarmed him before he realized anyone was there.

Within seconds the tunnel became a battlefield of confusion.

By the time the steam began clearing...

Tristan, Lily, and Eli were gone.

They emerged through a storm drain nearly half a mile away beside the East River.

Cold rain poured from the night sky.

The city continued around them, completely unaware that one of New York's most powerful criminal empires had just declared war on itself.

Tristan finally reached into his pocket and switched on a satellite phone that only three people knew existed.

He dialed one number.

The call connected after a single ring.

A calm female voice answered.

"I was beginning to think you were dead."

"So was Marcus."

A brief silence followed.

Then the woman spoke.

"How many betrayed you?"

Tristan looked toward the glittering Manhattan skyline.

"More than I ever imagined."

"And how many still stand with you?"

He glanced at Lily and the exhausted little boy sleeping against his shoulder.

Then he answered quietly,

"I don't know."

Another pause.

Finally, the woman said four words that changed everything.

"Then trust no one."

Before Tristan could reply...

A black SUV stopped across the street.

Its headlights remained off.

The rear door slowly opened.

Someone stepped out wearing a long gray coat.

An elderly man.

Tristan's eyes widened.

Impossible.

May you like

Because the man walking toward him had supposedly been buried three weeks earlier.

Thomas Bennett was alive.
