Chapter 1: The Threshold

The crystal chandelier overhead cast a cold, brilliant glow across the marble tiles of the mansion’s foyer. Julian stood near the archway, his dark grey trousers and white dress shirt slightly wrinkled after a long evening at his desk. Beside him, his seven-year-old daughter, Maya, shifted her small feet against the chilly stone floor. Her long, light-brown hair fell over her pale shoulders, framing the plain white nightdress she wore to bed every night.

"Dad," Maya whispered softly, her head bowed. "My back hurts."

Julian knelt beside her, his breath catching in his throat. He gently gathered the fabric of her nightdress and lifted it a few inches. Beneath the light cloth, across her shoulder blades, lay a series of dark, raised crimson welts—chemical-like chemical burns pattern spreading across her delicate skin.

"Julian, please," Clara said, her voice smooth and measured. She stood on the second step of the grand staircase, dressed in a burgundy satin slip dress, a glass of Cabernet hanging loosely from her manicured fingers. "You’re making a scene out of nothing. She probably just rubbed against the raw oak trim in the sunroom."

Julian didn't answer her. The sheer panic in his chest crowded out any argument. He scooped Maya into his arms, feeling the slight heat radiating from her small frame, and pulled the double front doors open wide into the cool night air.

Outside, the porch lights illuminated the long gravel driveway. Down near the mailbox, Mrs. Martha Gable, the seventy-year-old neighbor from across the ridge, stood in her pink quilted bathrobe, a heavy flashlight beam cutting through the damp fog.

"Julian?" Martha called out, her voice raspy from decades in the valley. "Is everything alright over there?"

Julian hurried down the stone steps, carrying Maya toward the station wagon parked near the garage. Clara ran out behind him, her heels clicking sharply against the wet pavement.

"You're overreacting!" Clara snapped, though her hand trembled against her wine glass. "If you take her to the county hospital, people are going to ask questions we don't need to answer!"

Julian pulled his smartphone from his pocket as he unlocked the car door with his thumb. A emergency push notification illuminated the dark screen: COUNTY HEALTH ALERT: UNREPORTED CHEMICAL LEAK DETECTED NEAR BLACKWOOD RIDGE WELLS. RESIDENTS ADVISED TO CEASE WATER USE IMMEDIATELY.

Julian looked from the glowing screen to Clara's face. The color had drained from her cheeks, leaving her as pale as the marble floor inside. He put Maya gently into her booster seat, buckled her in, and shut the door without saying another word.
