Chapter 12: The Cabin Spring

A month passed, bringing the full warmth of late spring to the valley. The apple trees behind the cabin bloomed with pale pink blossoms, and the river ran high and clear from the melting mountain snow.

Julian sat on the porch table, working on his laptop. He had taken a remote position with an environmental design firm in the city, helping communities plan safe, sustainable water distribution systems.

Maya ran through the grass with Martha Gable’s golden retriever, her laughter ringing out across the quiet yard. She wore a simple bright red sundress, her shoulder blades bare to the soft afternoon sunlight. The pink marks on her skin were nearly invisible now, smoothed away by time and medicine.

Martha walked up the gravel path, holding a fresh basket of baked berry muffins.

"Smells like summer," Martha said, setting the basket on the outdoor table beside Julian's computer.

"Thanks, Martha," Julian said, closing his laptop lid. "How are things up on the ridge?"

"Quiet," Martha said, sitting down on the bench with a sigh of relief. "The county contractors started laying the new municipal water pipe yesterday. They say every house on Blackwood Road will be connected to the city supply by the end of July."

"That’s good news," Julian said.

"Clara was up there yesterday," Martha added, watching Julian's face carefully. "She was supervising the removal of those heavy chemical drums from the old basement. Working right alongside the cleanup crew in rubber boots."

Julian looked out at Maya, who was throwing a tennis ball across the lawn for the dog. "She’s doing the work."

"She is," Martha agreed. "People can change, Julian, if they’re forced to face the truth of what they’ve done."

"I hope so," Julian said quietly. "For her sake."
