Chapter 14: Restitution
By late summer, the federal court finalized the comprehensive settlement agreement. Vance Development was formally dissolved, its remaining assets placed into a court-supervised trust managed by an independent board of environmental engineers and valley representatives.
Julian was asked to serve as the community representative on the trust board, ensuring that every dollar was spent directly on soil restoration and water safety monitoring for the valley.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, the trust hosted a small gathering at the Oakhaven Public Library to mark the completion of the first phase of the ridge remediation project.
Clara attended quietly, sitting in the back row among local residents. When the presentation ended, Julian walked over to where she stood by the coffee station.
"You did a good job on the cleanup oversight, Clara," Julian said, offering a quiet, genuine smile.
"The engineers say the soil in the eastern ravine will be completely clean by next spring," Clara said, her voice steady and grounded. "I’m moving to Chicago next month, Julian. I took a job with an environmental non-profit doing urban brownfield reclamation."
"That sounds like a good place to make a fresh start," Julian said.
"I wanted to say goodbye to Maya before I leave," Clara said, her eyes searching his face tentatively. "If that’s alright with you."
Julian turned and looked across the room. Maya was sitting at a low table with several other children, drawing pictures with markers.

Clara took a deep breath, nodded gratefully, and walked slowly toward the table. Julian watched as Maya looked up, smiled softly, and moved over to make room for Clara on the wooden bench beside her.
