Chapter 15: Fresh Soil

Autumn came to Blackwood Valley with a quiet, golden brilliance. The leaves on the maples along the river turned deep orange and red, scattering across the driveway of the river cabin in the morning breeze.
Julian stood on the back porch, holding a warm mug of coffee in his hands. The air was crisp, smelling of fallen leaves and woodsmoke from the chimney.
Down in the garden plot, Maya was digging up autumn potatoes with a small wooden trowel. She wore a thick blue sweater and yellow rain boots, her long light-brown hair pulled back into a messy braid. Her laughter drifted up through the quiet morning air as she held up a large, round potato for him to see.
"Dad! Look at this one!" she called out, holding it high above her head.
"That's a giant one, sweetie!" Julian called back, smiling as he walked down the wooden steps into the yard.
He knelt beside her in the dark, rich soil. The earth was cold to the touch, turned over and refreshed after months of work.
Maya wiped her forehead with the back of her sleeve, leaving a small streak of dirt on her cheek. She looked down at her hands, then turned her arm over to glance casually at her skin. The pink marks from months ago were completely gone now, leaving only smooth, healthy skin beneath her sweater sleeve.
"Dad?" she asked softly, looking up at him.
"Yeah, Maya?"
"Are we going to stay here forever?"
Julian looked around at the tall white pines standing tall against the blue sky, the clear river flowing steadily past the edge of the property, and the small, warm cabin that had given them shelter when they needed it most.
He reached out and gently rubbed the dirt off her cheek with his thumb.

"Yeah, Maya," Julian said softly, his voice full of quiet peace. "We're home."
Maya smiled, dropped the potato into her basket, and reached out her hand to help him up. Julian took it, standing together in the bright, clear autumn sun.
