Chapter 5: A Knock on the Door

The sharp, authoritative rap on the heavy mahogany door of Room 412 broke the tense silence that had settled over the suite.
Leo jumped at the sound, instinctively pressing closer to Elena, who murmured soothing words into his hair. Jonathan straightened his jacket, stepped across the plush carpet, and unlocked the deadbolt. He pulled the door open to reveal two uniformed police officers and a middle-aged detective whose sharp eyes immediately took in the scene inside.
“Mr. Vance?” the detective asked, flashing a badge identifying him as Detective Miller. “We received a chaotic report from the ballroom downstairs regarding a disturbance and a child in distress.” Jonathan nodded calmly, stepping aside to grant them entry. “Come in, Detective. We have been expecting you.
The boy is safe, but there is a serious situation that needs your immediate attention.” Detective Miller stepped into the suite, followed by his younger partner. His gaze drifted past Jonathan to the sofa, where Elena sat shielding seven-year-old Leo, who was wrapped tightly in a warm blanket.
Miller’s expression softened slightly at the sight of the traumatized child, though his professional instincts remained razor-sharp.
He approached cautiously, kneeling down to be at eye level with Leo. “Hello there, son. My name is Detective Miller.
Can you tell me what your name is?” Leo hesitated, looking up at Elena for reassurance. Elena gave him an encouraging nod and a gentle squeeze of his shoulder.
“My name is Leo,” the boy whispered, his voice barely audible. “Leo Vance.” The detective nodded slowly, pulling out a small notebook.
“Thank you, Leo. I know you’ve had a very frightening night.
Can you tell me what happened to the shirt you were wearing? We heard there was an incident involving a woman in a burgundy dress.” Before Leo could answer, the door swung open further.
Evelyn stood in the doorway, escorted by hotel security and looking utterly composed despite the gravity of the situation.
Her dark hair was still perfectly styled, though her eyes blazed with calculated fury.
“Detective, I am glad you are here,” Evelyn announced loudly, stepping into the room uninvited.
“That child and these people have engaged in a violent altercation in the private residence upstairs.
That blood on the boy’s shirt belongs to my husband, who is currently lying unconscious in the study.”

Jonathan stepped forward instantly, his presence blocking Evelyn’s path once more. His voice was cold, steady, and laden with warning as he looked at the detective.
“Don’t listen to a word she says, Detective. Evelyn staged this entire tragedy, and she is the one who harmed her own husband.” The room grew dead silent as the two conflicting narratives collided in the quiet hotel suite.
