Chapter 7: Fractured Loyalties

The silence that followed Leo’s confession was absolute, broken only by the hum of the suite’s ventilation system.

Evelyn’s face drained of color for a split second before she twisted her features into an expression of exaggerated shock and betrayal. “That is a monstrous fabrication!” Evelyn cried out, her voice pitching slightly higher.

“The boy has been thoroughly coached by Elena and Jonathan to cover up his own violent outburst! Look at him—he is wearing the evidence on his shirt!” Detective Miller ignored Evelyn’s theatrical outburst, keeping his gaze fixed intently on the young boy. He had spent two decades on the force; he knew the subtle tells of a coached child versus the raw, ragged trauma of a witness to genuine violence.

Leo’s micro-expressions—the trembling lower lip, the frantic darting of his eyes, the genuine physical shudder—could not be faked by a seven-year-old. “Thank you for telling me the truth, Leo,” Detective Miller said gently, his tone softening to reassure the child. He then turned slowly to face Evelyn, his professional demeanor turning icy.

“Mrs. Vance, you mentioned earlier that your husband was unconscious in the study. Yet the boy just described a violent attack involving a heavy object. How did you know the exact nature of the injury before anyone had even entered that room to inspect the scene?” Evelyn faltered, her calculated poise cracking visibly.

She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out.

She had trapped herself in her own narrative. Jonathan stepped forward, his voice low and firm.

“She slipped, Detective.

Because she was standing over Arthur when it happened.” Before Evelyn could scramble for a defense, the radio on Detective Miller’s shoulder crackled to life. Officer Davis’s voice came through loud and clear, echoing in the quiet suite. “Detective Miller, this is Davis. We’ve secured the study on the third floor. Mr. Arthur Vance has a severe head injury from a blunt instrument.

Paramedics are on their way up now. But… Mr. Vance is conscious. He’s asking for his son, Leo.” Relief washed over Elena’s face, and she pulled Leo closer, pressing a kiss to his forehead. Leo let out a long breath, the unbearable weight on his small shoulders lifting just a fraction. Detective Miller clipped his radio back onto his belt and leveled a hard stare at Evelyn.

“It appears your husband has a different story to tell us, Mrs. Vance. Please remain right where you are. Officer Davis will escort you downstairs shortly.” Evelyn’s facade finally shattered completely. Her dark eyes darted toward the door, calculating escape routes, but two hotel security guards stepped inside the suite, blocking her path. The trap she had meticulously laid for a helpless child had closed around her instead.
