Chapter 9: Confessions in the Study

The flurry of forensic activity in the study slowed as Detective Miller motioned for the technicians to give the family a moment of privacy. Arthur Vance exhaled a shaky breath, his hand resting gently on the back of his son’s head.
He looked up at his brother Jonathan, then at Elena, whose white wedding gown stood as a stark reminder of the celebration that had been so viciously interrupted. “I am sorry,” Arthur said, his voice raspy and strained from the trauma.
“I never imagined Evelyn’s ambition would go this far. I thought I could manage her, contain her greed. I was a fool.”
Jonathan pulled a chair close to the medical cot and sat down, his stern demeanor replaced by a deep, fraternal concern. “You trusted the wrong person, Arthur. We all did. But you are alive, and Leo is safe.
That is what matters now.” Arthur shook his head slowly, wincing as the movement pulled at his bandaged wound. “She wanted control of the family estate, Jonathan. When I refused to sign the transfer papers tonight, she snapped. She picked up the brass desk ornament and struck me from behind.
I lost consciousness instantly.” Detective Miller stepped forward, pulling out his notebook to document the formal statement. “Mr. Vance, your son witnessed the entire attack.
He ran to protect himself when Evelyn turned her aggression toward him, and she chased him down the hall, trying to frame him for the crime.”
Arthur looked down at Leo, fresh tears spilling over his tired eyelids. He pulled the boy slightly closer, pressing a kiss to his small hand. “My brave boy,” Arthur choked out. “You ran to save yourself, and in doing so, you saved me.
Evelyn told me she would make sure I lost everything—my company, my son, my freedom. She had this planned for months.” Elena stepped forward, resting a comforting hand on Arthur’s arm.

“She tried to ruin our wedding and destroy an innocent child to secure her thefts, Arthur. But her web of lies unraveled the moment she stepped into that ballroom and faced us all.”
The heavy door to the study opened again, and Officer Davis stepped inside, nodding discreetly to Detective Miller. “Detective, we searched Mrs. Vance’s private luggage in the suite upstairs. We found the forged transfer documents, along with several high-value bearer bonds and jewelry belonging to the estate that had been reported missing over the past year.” Detective Miller closed his notebook with a sharp snap. “It seems our case is more than clear. Evelyn’s greed has finally backed her into a corner she cannot talk her way out of.”
