Chapter 8: The Gathering Storm

As the elevator doors chimed on the fourth floor, the sterile smell of antiseptic and the hurried footsteps of paramedics signaled a shift in the evening's chaos. Detective Miller stepped out to brief the medical team before guiding them toward the private suite where Arthur Vance lay resting.

Elena stood up slowly from the sofa, smoothing the wrinkles of her white wedding gown. Though the fabric was stained with a few smudges from holding Leo, her resolve remained unbroken. Jonathan stood by her side, his hand resting reassuringly on her shoulder.

“We need to go down to the third floor,” Jonathan said quietly, looking at Elena and the boy. “Arthur is asking for Leo. Whatever history there is between the brothers, the truth needs to come out in the open.”

Leo looked up, clutching Elena’s hand tightly. “Can I see father?” he asked, his voice small and hopeful.

“Yes, darling. Your father is awake, and he wants to see you,” Elena assured him gently, kneeling down to wipe a stray tear from his cheek.

“Everything is going to be alright now.” They stepped out into the hallway, escorted by Detective Miller. Evelyn was already being led away in the opposite direction by security and a backup officer, her face twisted in silent, impotent rage as she cast one final, venomous glare toward the family she had tried to destroy.

They descended the grand staircase, bypassing the silent, shell-shocked wedding guests who still lingered near the ballroom doors, watching the drama unfold in stunned whispers.

Arriving at the third-floor study, the scene was a grim tableau of police tape, flashing cameras, and forensics equipment.

Arthur Vance, a distinguished-looking man of forty-five with dark hair matching Jonathan’s, lay on a motorized medical cot near a mahogany desk. A white bandage was wrapped securely around his head, and his face was pale, but his eyes were alert and searching the room.

The moment Leo walked through the doorway, Arthur’s expression softened into a profound, tearful wave of relief. “Leo,” Arthur breathed out hoarsely, raising a weak hand toward his son.

Leo broke away from Elena’s grip and ran to the side of the cot, burying his face in his father’s blankets while careful not to touch his bandages.

“Daddy, I was so scared,” Leo sobbed softly. Arthur stroked his son’s light brown hair, his eyes meeting Jonathan’s and Elena’s over the boy’s head with a heavy, unspoken gratitude.
