Chapter 11: The Echo Chamber

Arthur sat behind his massive mahogany desk, the heavy oak door of his study firmly shut against the reality of the hallway. The room was a sanctuary of success, lined with leather-bound books and awards that gleamed in the dim light. Yet, for the first time in his life, Arthur felt utterly bankrupt. The image of Mateo—his son, his own flesh and blood—cowering behind a maid to hide from him played on a relentless, agonizing loop in his mind.
He poured himself a glass of amber liquid, the crystal decanter trembling slightly in his grip. He had built an empire from the ground up, navigating hostile takeovers and ruthless market crashes, but he had allowed his own home to become a battleground. He had convinced himself that providing wealth was synonymous with providing love. The shattered porcelain outside his door was a harsh indictment of that lie. The silence of the study, usually a comfort, now felt like a suffocating echo chamber of his own failures as a father.
