Chapter 18: Thawing the Museum

The physical landscape of the mansion began to mirror the internal changes of its inhabitants. The oppressive, museum-like quality of the house slowly thawed. One Saturday afternoon, Arthur returned from the city not with another priceless artifact, but with a simple, silver picture frame.
He called Mateo into the living room and placed the frame on the central mantelpiece, right where everyone could see it. Inside the frame was a vibrant photograph of Mateo’s mother, laughing warmly at the camera. Mateo stared at the photograph, tears pricking his eyes, and then looked at his father. Arthur placed a heavy, reassuring hand on his son's shoulder. They didn't need to hide her away anymore. The house was finally becoming a home.
