Chapter 7: The Aftermath

The crying lasted for what felt like hours, though it was likely only a few minutes. Slowly, Mateo’s sobs subsided into hiccups. He pulled back from Rosa, his face red and splotchy, eyes swollen. He looked down at the shattered teacup, suddenly acutely aware of the destruction he had caused. Shame washed over him, painting his cheeks a deep crimson.
"I'm sorry," he mumbled, his voice thick with tears. He wouldn't meet her eyes.
"We will clean it up together," Rosa said simply. She didn't brush off the behavior, but she didn't shame him for it either. She offered a path to redemption. It was a simple act of accountability, stripped of any malice. She stood up, brushing a piece of porcelain from her skirt, and offered him her hand.
