Chapter 2: The Unflinching Target

For a fraction of a second, time stood completely still. The shards of porcelain settled on the floor like jagged snow. Anyone else would have flinched, screamed, or turned on their heel and fled. Anyone else would have reprimanded the boy, threatened him with severe consequences, or dragged him by the ear to his father. But Rosa did not move.
She stood frozen for only a heartbeat before her expression shifted. The shock melted away, replaced not by anger, but by a profound, agonizing wave of empathy. The boy in front of her was trembling, his fists clenched, chest heaving as he waited for the inevitable explosion of adult fury.
Rosa took a slow, deliberate step forward, her sensible black heels crunching on the broken china. She knelt down, bringing herself to eye level with the furious child. "That hurt, Mateo," she said, her voice steady but laced with a gentle sorrow. She didn't mean the teacup; she meant the intent behind it. She reached out, placing a soft, worn hand flat against his chest, right over his racing heart. "You must be carrying something very heavy in here."
