“Please!” Clara sobbed, her voice barely a whisper. “The baby… please, Ruby!”
Ruby threw her head back and laughed, a shrill, grating sound that bounced off the glass walls of the empty offices. She raised the bat high above her head for another devastating blow.
Then, the soft, melodic ding of the executive elevator broke the tension.

The heavy silver doors slid open, and Arthur stepped out. He was a man who commanded every room he entered, dressed impeccably in a tailored white suit. But his usual composed demeanor vanished the second his eyes locked onto the scene at the end of the hall. For a fraction of a second, the corridor froze in a tableau of pure nightmare.
