Chapter 9: The Devil in a Cell

Behind the bars of the city's precinct, Ruby sat with perfect posture despite the cracked rib. Her lawyer, a slick man in a thousand-dollar suit, sat across from her.
"They have you on camera, Ruby. They have Arthur's testimony. It's attempted murder," the lawyer whispered.
Ruby dabbed the dried blood from her forehead with a tissue. She smiled, a cold, reptilian curving of her lips. "I am a Vanguard," she whispered. "Arthur thinks he can discard me for a pregnant secretary. He thinks hitting me with a bat makes him a hero. We’ll see who the hero is when the board finds out he assaulted his wife."
