Chapter 3: The Mask of Innocence

Ruby’s peripheral vision caught the flash of Arthur's white suit. In an instant, the feral predator vanished, replaced by a masterclass in manipulation.

She dropped the bat. It clattered noisily against the marble floor. Moving with surprising agility, Ruby slid off the desk. Her chest heaved, and she brought both hands up to her chest, her fingers trembling against her diamond necklace. Her eyes widened in mock horror.

As Arthur skidded to a halt in front of the desk, his chest heaving, Ruby forced a radiant, yet profoundly unnatural smile. She looked at him with wide, innocent eyes, a lamb caught in a wolf's den.

“Arthur! Honey!” she gasped, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. She pointed a manicured finger toward the desk. “I just found her! I don't know what happened, she just fell on her own! I was trying to help her out!”
