Chapter 4: The Shattering of Illusions

Arthur didn’t look at Ruby. His eyes were locked on the terrified, whimpering form of Clara beneath the desk. He saw the splinters. He saw the bat on the floor. He saw the terror in Clara's eyes.
When he finally turned to Ruby, his face was a mask of absolute fury. The veins in his neck strained against his collar. His jaw was clenched so tightly his teeth threatened to crack. The sheer force of his rage seemed to suck the oxygen out of the corridor.

"Enough!" Arthur roared. The word was a physical blow, tearing through the corridor and shattering Ruby's pathetic charade.
Ruby’s fake smile dissolved instantly. Her facial muscles froze. The blood drained from her cheeks, leaving her thick makeup looking like war paint on a corpse. Her eyes darted wildly, the paralyzing realization setting in: she was caught, and her lies held no power here.
