PART 3 — THE DATE HE FORGOT TO COUNT

Dr. Anderson did not raise her voice.

That was what made the room feel colder.

Daniel stood beside the door with Vanessa half a step behind him, both of them staring at the ultrasound monitor as if the screen had suddenly become a witness.

“Mr. Mitchell,” Dr. Anderson said, “your wife is not carrying another man’s baby simply because you had a vasectomy two months ago.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“That’s not how this works.”

“No,” the doctor replied calmly. “That is exactly how this works.”

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Are you saying vasectomies fail?”

Dr. Anderson looked at her.

“I’m saying men are not considered sterile immediately after the procedure. They are specifically told to use protection until follow-up testing confirms zero sperm count.”

The silence that followed was small.

Sharp.

Daniel looked away first.

My heart began pounding for a different reason.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“You knew that,” I whispered.

Daniel’s eyes snapped back to mine.

“What?”

“You knew there was a waiting period.” My voice shook, but I did not stop. “You knew when I told you. You just wanted an excuse.”

Vanessa gave a brittle laugh.

“This is ridiculous.”

Dr. Anderson turned the monitor slightly.

“The pregnancy is measuring approximately ten weeks and three days.”

Daniel’s face drained.

Ten weeks.

Three days.

The room seemed to shrink around that number.

I remembered the weekend by the lake before Daniel’s supposed procedure. The way he held me like he was trying to prove something. The way he kept saying we needed to start over.

I remembered believing him.

Dr. Anderson continued.

“Based on this dating, conception occurred before your husband would have been medically cleared after the vasectomy.”

Daniel swallowed.

Vanessa’s smile vanished completely.

I looked at her.

Why did she look afraid?

Daniel stepped forward.

“That doesn’t prove it’s mine.”

“No,” I said, sitting up slowly, wiping gel from my stomach with shaking hands. “But it proves you had no right to call me a cheater before asking a single question.”

Vanessa’s eyes flashed.

“Oh, please. Don’t turn yourself into a victim.”

Something inside me went still.

“I didn’t have to,” I said. “You both did that for me.”

Daniel looked at the floor.

For the first time in weeks, he could not meet my eyes.

Then Dr. Anderson asked the question that split the room open.

“Mr. Mitchell, did you complete your post-vasectomy follow-up test?”

Daniel did not answer.

My breath caught.

“Daniel?”

Vanessa snapped, “That’s private medical information.”

Dr. Anderson folded her arms.

“It became relevant when he entered my examination room accusing my patient of infidelity.”

Daniel’s face reddened.

“I was busy.”

The answer hit me harder than the accusation.

Busy.

He had destroyed my reputation, moved in with another woman, handed me divorce papers, and tried to take my house because he had been too busy to confirm whether he was actually sterile.

I laughed.

Once.

It came out broken.

“You didn’t even know.”

Daniel looked at me then.

For half a second, shame crossed his face.

Then pride killed it.

“We still need a paternity test.”

“Fine,” I said immediately.

Vanessa turned sharply toward him.

“Daniel—”

That was when I knew.

She did not want certainty.

She wanted the accusation to survive.

Dr. Anderson stepped toward the door.

“I’ll document today’s findings in the medical record. Lauren, I also recommend you consult legal counsel before discussing custody or divorce terms.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Custody?”

I looked down at the tiny heartbeat flickering on the screen.

Fast.

Strong.

Mine to protect.

Then I looked back at him.

“You wanted a fast divorce,” I said. “Now you’ll get a careful one.”

Vanessa grabbed Daniel’s sleeve.

“We should go.”

But before they could leave, the nurse knocked and opened the door.

“Dr. Anderson,” she said quietly, “there’s a woman at the front desk asking for Mrs. Mitchell.”

I frowned.

“Who?”

The nurse looked uncomfortable.

“She says she’s Daniel’s mother.”

Daniel went pale.

Vanessa whispered, “Why is she here?”

Dr. Anderson looked between them.

Daniel’s mother stepped into the hallway a moment later, clutching her purse like it contained a weapon.

Her eyes locked on my stomach.

Then she looked at Daniel.

May you like

And said the words that made Vanessa freeze.

“Tell her the truth before I do.”
