PART 26 — THE GHOST SISTER

The courtroom went utterly and completely dead silent. The kind of heavy, suffocating silence that follows a bomb dropping, where the dust hasn't even begun to settle, and no one dares to breathe. The only sound slicing through that unbearable quiet was the sharp, breathless wail of the newborn infant lying inside the blue plastic carrier. It was a sound so out of place in a room built for cold legalities that it felt like an auditory hallucination.
Then, the screaming started. Vanessa threw herself against the reinforced glass of the remote detention screen. Her voice was raw, tearing at her vocal cords as she thrashed against the restraints the guards had suddenly applied. "Valerie! Run! Get out of there! He’s going to kill you! He’s going to kill the baby!"
But the woman named Valerie did not move. She stood absolutely frozen in the center of the aisle. Her face was an exact, terrifying replica of Vanessa’s, right down to the arch of her eyebrows and the curve of her jaw, but her eyes were entirely hollow. She looked like a ghost trapped in a living body, a puppet whose strings had been cut long ago, leaving only a shell conditioned to obey.
Graham Vale stood tall, casually adjusting the cuffs of his immaculate silver suit. He looked around the room, savoring the absolute shock radiating from every single person present. "Your Honor," he began, his voice smooth, resonant, and dripping with venomous triumph. "Allow me to introduce Valerie Parker. The twin sister that Vanessa has kept hidden in the shadows for twenty-five years. A tragic story of a broken family, truly. But more importantly, allow me to introduce this child."
He stepped forward, pointing a long, manicured finger at the blue carrier resting on the floor.
"This child," Graham announced, letting the words hang in the air, "is the next legal and biological heir to the Mitchell Trust."
Rachel was on her feet before he even finished the sentence, her chair screeching violently against the hardwood floor. "Objection! This is an absurd theatrical stunt! Your Honor, this man is making a mockery of this court!"
"Is it a stunt?" Graham countered smoothly, already sliding a thick, manila envelope across the judge’s bench. "DNA does not lie, Counselor. A certified, court-admissible genetic test is enclosed. This baby carries the direct, undeniable bloodline of Robert Mitchell."
Rachel narrowed her eyes. "How is that remotely possible?"
Graham smiled, turning his head slowly to lock eyes with the man standing near the back rows. "Ask the esteemed ex-husband of your client."
Every eye in the room pivoted to Daniel. The color had completely drained from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse. His jaw dropped, and he stumbled backward until his shoulders hit the heavy wooden doors.
"No," Daniel stammered, his voice trembling so violently it barely carried across the room. "That’s impossible. I had a vasectomy. I made sure of it. There is no way I fathered another child."
May you like
Graham let out a low, echoing chuckle. "Yes, Daniel. You did have the procedure. But perhaps you forgot what you did beforehand? You stored a genetic sample at Dr. Anderson’s fertility clinic, just in case you ever changed your mind. A prudent decision. And all I had to do was... borrow it."
My heart completely stopped. The air vanished from my lungs. My hand flew to my stomach,
