PART 30 — THE NEVADA SHADOW

The courtroom was in a state of absolute pandemonium. Judge Porter was hammering her gavel, but the noise was deafening. On the hospital video feed, David began to cough—a violent, rattling sound that forced the room into a stunned silence as everyone strained to listen to him.
Bandages were still wrapped tightly around his head from the accident, but his eyes were sharp, burning with a vindictive fire.
"I told you, Lauren," David wheezed, his voice amplified through the courtroom speakers. "I told you I took Daniel’s place at that little chapel in Nevada to sign the fake marriage papers. But that wasn’t the only job I was hired to do."
The scattered, confusing pieces of the last few months suddenly, violently clicked into perfect place. David wasn’t just a visual stand-in for a fake wedding. Graham had needed biological material. He needed DNA to create an heir, but Daniel’s actual, verified DNA had been legally locked down by the clinic’s security protocols the moment I had flagged my divorce proceedings and reported the hostile environment.
"You used the wrong vial, Graham," David said, a bloody, bitter smile spreading across his bruised face. "You thought you controlled every single variable. You thought you could just throw money at the underground clinic staff and they would hand over a billionaire's genetics. But a homeless, desperate junkie like me? I know how to survive. I knew if you got what you wanted, you’d dispose of me. So, I swapped the barcodes on the vials in the refrigeration unit."
David let out a dry, rattling laugh. "You paid millions of dollars to steal my DNA, Graham. Congratulations. You are the proud sponsor of a street drifter's baby."
Vanessa collapsed onto the floor of her holding cell, letting out a wail of pure, unadulterated despair. Her entire life’s work, her manipulation, her crimes—all for a baby that held zero claim to the Mitchell fortune.
Daniel stood completely paralyzed, his brain short-circuiting as he realized the depths of the conspiracy that had been orchestrated right under his nose.
And Graham Vale... for the very first time since I had met him, the untouchable, calculating wolf of Wall Street looked like cornered prey. His eyes darted wildly around the room, assessing the exits. He had committed multiple federal felonies to create an heir, only to produce a child that meant absolutely nothing to the Mitchell Trust. He was ruined.
"Bailiffs! Arrest that man!" Rachel shouted, pointing directly at Graham as he slowly began backing away from the defendant's table, moving toward the heavy double doors at the rear of the courtroom.
PART 31 — THE BLACKOUT
But a man like Graham Vale never walked into a room without an exit strategy. He never operated without shadows to hide in.
Just as the bailiffs unclipped their handcuffs and moved toward him, the entire courthouse plunged into absolute darkness. The heavy lights overhead cut out simultaneously with a loud, mechanical clack, plunging a room with no windows into pitch blackness.
Panic erupted instantly. The darkness swallowed the room whole. People began screaming, shoving against each other in a blind rush for the doors. Chairs crashed violently to the hardwood floor as reporters trampled over each other. Above the chaotic din, the piercing, terrified cries of the newborn infant echoed sharply, amplifying the sheer terror of the moment.
"Lauren!" Noah yelled in the dark.
I couldn't see anything, but I felt the rush of air before I felt the impact. The sixteen-year-old boy lunged at me, his arms wrapping tightly around my shoulders. He dragged me down to the floor, curling his own body over mine, using his back as a human shield over my pregnant belly.
Then, the deafening roar of a gunshot rang out.
The muzzle flash briefly illuminated the room in a strobe of yellow light, revealing the terrifying silhouette of a man near the back doors pointing a weapon toward the front. Glass shattered somewhere to my left, showering the jury box with sharp fragments.
"Stay down! Everybody stay down!" a guard screamed.
It took ten agonizing seconds for the emergency backup generators to kick in. When the dim, orange emergency lights finally flickered to life, casting eerie shadows across the panicked room, the space where Graham Vale had been standing was completely empty. The heavy wooden doors were swinging shut. He was gone.
But as my eyes adjusted to the dim light, the true horror of the situation revealed itself. Valerie was still sitting on the bench, rocking back and forth in a catatonic state. The baby was still crying in the carrier.
But lying on the floor, directly in the path between where the shooter had stood and where Noah and I were hiding, was Daniel.
A dark, spreading pool of crimson blood was soaking rapidly into the courtroom carpet beneath him. He had thrown himself directly into the line of fire. He had taken the bullet meant for the boy he had rejected and the wife he had betrayed.

"Daniel!" I screamed, pushing out from under Noah and dropping to my knees beside him.
His hands were clutching his chest. He looked up at me, his eyes wide with shock, blood bubbling at the corner of his pale lips. "I’m... sorry..." he gasped, his voice a wet, gurgling whisper as his eyes began to lose focus. "I finally... protected... our baby."
