PART 18 — ROBERT’S FINAL ACKNOWLEDGMENT

Rachel called the fire department before I could scream.

Detective Harris called tactical units.

Daniel ran for the door.

I followed him.

Rachel caught my arm.

“No.”

“That’s my house.”

“And your baby is inside you, not inside that wall.”

The words stopped me.

Not because they comforted me.

Because they were true.

On the live feed, David held the match close to the torn nursery wall, smiling at the camera like a child waiting for applause.

But he did not drop it.

He wanted us watching.

Daniel leaned over Rachel’s laptop.

“David,” he whispered.

As if his brother could hear.

David reached into the wall and pulled out a sealed metal tube.

Then he held it up for the camera.

The label was handwritten:

FOR DANIEL.

Daniel made a sound I had never heard from him before.

Not grief.

Not fear.

Recognition.

As if some part of him had always known there was a missing shape in his life.

David slipped the tube into his coat.

Then blew out the match.

The feed cut.

Detective Harris cursed.

“He’s gone.”

Rachel’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

David’s voice came through.

It was Daniel’s voice with all the warmth removed.

“Hello, brother.”

Daniel grabbed the phone.

“Why are you doing this?”

David laughed.

“Because I know who raised me.”

“Graham used you.”

“No. Graham kept me.”

The room went silent.

David continued.

“You got the house. The name. The father who chose you even after knowing you weren’t his blood. I got Cassandra, locked rooms, and Graham telling me every day that one day I would take back what Margaret stole.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I didn’t steal anything.”

“No,” David said. “You just lived inside the theft.”

I felt something inside me shift.

Because that was how I had felt when Daniel accused me.

As if I had been shoved into a crime someone else wrote around me.

David’s voice softened.

Almost kindly.

“Lauren, I’m sorry about the nursery. That was unnecessary.”

My blood went cold.

“You’re apologizing?”

“I was told you were part of it. I’m beginning to doubt that.”

Rachel’s eyes sharpened.

“David, where are you?”

He ignored her.

“Robert’s final acknowledgment is real. It proves Daniel is Daniel Mitchell by legal acknowledgment, regardless of blood. If Lauren has it, Graham loses the Nevada argument.”

Daniel gripped the phone.

“Then give it to us.”

David laughed.

“You still think I came to help you?”

The line crackled.

Then his voice dropped.

“I’ll trade it.”

“For what?” Rachel asked.

“Cassandra.”

Detective Harris stiffened.

David continued.

“Graham sent Vanessa to burn Lauren’s life. He sent Cassandra to falsify bodies, samples, signatures. But Cassandra is my mother. And Graham is going to kill her before she testifies.”

I looked at Daniel.

His face had gone white.

Rachel spoke carefully.

“Where is Cassandra?”

David was silent.

Then he said, “Ask Vanessa.”

The call ended.

Twenty minutes later, Detective Harris returned from the holding facility with an update.

Vanessa had agreed to talk.

But not to police.

To me.

Rachel hated it.

Daniel hated it.

I did not care.

Vanessa sat behind glass in a detention interview room, hair pulled back, face scrubbed clean of every performance except desperation.

For once, she did not smile.

“You want David?” she asked.

“I want the acknowledgment.”

“No,” she said. “You want your baby safe.”

My hand moved to my stomach.

Vanessa leaned forward.

“Then listen carefully. David isn’t the danger.”

“Graham is.”

She shook her head.

“Cassandra is.”

Rachel’s eyes narrowed.

Vanessa swallowed.

“Cassandra didn’t just switch samples. She created the records that made David legally invisible.”

Daniel whispered, “Why?”

Vanessa looked at him through the glass.

“Because David was never supposed to testify.”

Then she looked at me.

“He was supposed to die as Daniel.”

The room went still.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Tomorrow morning, Graham is going to produce a body. Burned. Identified by Daniel Mitchell’s dental records. Then he’ll say Lauren’s husband is dead, Vanessa is the widow, and your baby’s trust claim is frozen until the corpse is sorted out.”

Daniel stepped back.

Rachel whispered, “Where?”

Vanessa opened her eyes.

“The old Vale clinic.”

Then the lights in the interview room flickered.

Once.

Twice.

The emergency alarm began to scream.

And every lock in the facility opened at the same time.
