PART 28 — DANIEL’S CONFESSION

The judge immediately called for a mandatory two-hour recess, demanding all legal counsel meet in her chambers to review the supposed DNA documentation. The courtroom was cleared, leaving a thick, suffocating tension lingering in the air.
I sat in the small, fluorescent-lit holding room down the hall, clutching a paper cup of water that Rachel had forced into my hands. My whole body was trembling. Across the room, Daniel sat slumped against the cold brick wall. He had his head buried in his hands, aggressively pulling at the roots of his own hair as if trying to rip the reality out of his skull.
"I didn’t know," he sobbed, the sound pathetic and broken. "Lauren, you have to believe me. I swear to God I didn’t know he took that sample. I didn't know Vanessa forged your name at the clinic. I thought... I thought we were just leaving to start over."
I slowly turned my head to look at the man who used to be my entire world. The man I had promised to love in sickness and in health. The man who had looked at a positive pregnancy test and immediately accused me of being a whore. Now, stripped of his arrogance and Graham’s protection, he was just a hollow, pathetic shell, crushed beneath the weight of his own monstrous greed.
"You didn’t know?" I repeated, my voice devoid of any warmth, sharp as shattered glass. "You didn’t know because you didn't care to know. You were too busy sleeping with the woman who was actively destroying my life. You were too busy plotting with lawyers to throw your pregnant wife out on the street with nothing. You don't get to play the victim now, Daniel. You built this trap. Graham just locked the door."
At the small wooden table, Rachel was ignoring the drama, flipping rapidly through the massive stack of medical files Graham’s team had submitted. Her eyes darted back and forth across the pages, her brow furrowed in intense concentration.
Suddenly, her finger stopped on a specific line. "Wait a minute," she whispered, her voice tight.
"What is it?" I asked, sitting up straighter.
"This birth certificate," Rachel said, her eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. "The official date of birth for Valerie’s baby is listed as October 15th."
Rachel looked up, her gaze locking onto mine with the intensity of a predator catching a scent. "Lauren, think back. Where exactly were you on the morning of October 15th?"
The memory hit me like a physical blow. "I was at the hospital. That was the day I was admitted for severe spotting and cramping, right after Daniel kicked me out of the house and told the neighborhood I was cheating on him."
A slow, lethal smirk began to spread across Rachel’s face. The kind of smile that meant someone was about to be utterly destroyed. "If Valerie Parker was brought in for an emergency C-section on that exact day, at that exact hospital... there is only one attending physician who would have had the clearance to handle a high-profile, secretive case like that."
Only one name flashed in my mind. The memory of the ultrasound room. The moment she looked at the screen, saw the exact date of Daniel's vasectomy, and completely changed her demeanor.

"Dr. Anderson," I breathed out.
"Exactly," Rachel snapped her briefcase shut. "I'm making a phone call."
