PART 22 — VANESSA’S REAL HUSBAND

Vanessa Parker looked smaller behind jail glass.

Not innocent.

Never innocent.

But smaller.

The makeup was gone. The expensive confidence was gone. The perfect blonde hair was tied back with a rubber band from booking.

Still, when she saw Daniel, she smiled.

“You look terrible, husband.”

Daniel stepped toward the glass.

“I’m not your husband.”

Vanessa’s smile faded.

“No. You’re not.”

Rachel leaned forward.

“Then say it clearly.”

Vanessa looked at me.

Not Daniel.

Me.

“The man in the Nevada chapel was David Vale.”

Daniel’s lost twin.

The brother Graham kept.

The brother who looked close enough to Daniel to steal his life on paper.

Daniel’s face tightened.

“You married my brother under my name?”

Vanessa laughed once, bitterly.

“I thought I married you.”

The room went silent.

That was the first answer none of us expected.

Vanessa looked down at her hands.

“Graham told me Daniel used a private identity for legal protection. He said rich families do things quietly. He gave me documents. A license. A ceremony. A man who looked like you.”

Daniel whispered, “You didn’t know?”

Vanessa looked up sharply.

“Do not make me the fool in this room, Daniel. I knew plenty. I knew you were married to Lauren later. I knew Graham wanted her unstable. I knew the trust mattered. I knew I was being paid to make Lauren look guilty.”

Her eyes moved to me.

“I did not know I had married the wrong brother.”

Rachel’s voice stayed flat.

“Why reveal this now?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Because Graham is going to kill David and make the Nevada marriage impossible to challenge. Dead man. Bad records. Convenient confusion.”

Noah, sitting beside me, went rigid.

“David isn’t dead.”

Vanessa looked at him.

Her face changed.

For one second, she looked almost human.

“Noah.”

The boy stared at her.

“You knew me?”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I found your file in Graham’s office.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I was still deciding whether saving myself required hurting you.”

The honesty was ugly.

But it was honesty.

Vanessa slid something through the slot beneath the glass.

A ring.

Not her engagement ring from Daniel.

A cheap silver band.

“The chapel gave this to David. Graham made him wear it. I kept it because I thought it proved I was Daniel’s first wife.”

Rachel picked it up.

Inside the band was an engraving.

Not Daniel.

D.V.

David Vale.

Daniel sat back slowly.

Vanessa leaned toward him.

“You want your life back? Find David before Graham does.”

Rachel looked at the ring.

“This helps, but it doesn’t kill the certificate.”

“No,” Vanessa said.

Then she smiled again.

Cold.

Controlled.

“That’s in the recording.”

“What recording?” I asked.

Vanessa looked at me.

“The real ceremony audio. The officiant said David’s name before Graham made him restart.”

Rachel’s eyes sharpened.

“Where is it?”

Vanessa’s smile vanished.

“In the chapel safe.”

Daniel stood.

“Then we go to Nevada.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice dropped.

“Graham already knows you’ll try.”

She leaned closer to the glass.

“And if you reach that chapel before midnight, he’ll give the court a body.”

Daniel went still.

“Whose?”

Vanessa looked at Noah.

Then at me.

“David’s.”

Noah whispered, “No.”

May you like

Vanessa’s voice broke just slightly.

“And Graham will say Daniel killed him to erase the first marriage.”
