Chapter 11 - The Tremor in the Foundation

The peace of Sterling Manor was a beautiful illusion, shattered not by gunfire, but by a single envelope delivered to the front gates.

It was a crisp Tuesday morning when Adrian found it sitting on the marble console in the grand foyer. The envelope was thick, made of expensive heavy paper, and addressed to Catherine in elegant, flowing cursive. There was no stamp, no return address—just a wax seal on the back stamped with a crest Adrian recognized instantly.

A black wolf circling a broken crown. The mark of the Lupo Family, a ruthless European faction that had operated in the shadows behind the Valenti Syndicate for decades.

Adrian’s jaw tightened. He slipped the envelope into his jacket pocket before Catherine could come downstairs, walking straight into his private study. He broke the seal and pulled out a single sheet of parchment.

“The Valentis were sloppy servants, Catherine,” the letter read. “They took your home, but they forgot to look beneath it. The Sterling fortune does not belong to you alone. Your late father owed a blood debt to the Lupo Council. We are coming to collect the interest. If the Boss thinks his anchor can protect him from us, he is mistaken.”

Adrian crumpled the paper in his fist, his dark eyes flashing with a cold, protective rage. He had spent the last six months dismantling his own mafia empire to build a clean, legitimate life with Catherine. He had promised her peace, a life away from the blood and the shadows of the city.

The door to the study clicked open. Catherine stood there, bathed in the morning sunlight, wearing a soft cream sweater. Her golden hair caught the light, and her radiant face softened when she saw him. But her smile faltered when she noticed his rigid posture.

"Adrian?" she asked, walking over to the desk. "What's wrong?"

Adrian stood up, stepping around the desk to pull her into his arms, burying his face in her hair. He wanted to hide her from the world, but he knew Catherine wasn't a fragile flower anymore. She was a survivor.

"The past is trying to claw its way back, Catherine," Adrian murmured, his voice a low, gravelly rumble. "But I'm going to cut its hands off before it touches you."
