Chapter 12 - The Secret of the Ledger

Adrian called an emergency meeting with his most trusted associate, Marcus, in a secure warehouse near the Newport docks. The Atlantic breeze was cold, carrying the scent of salt and rusted iron.

"The Lupo Family doesn't make empty threats, Adrian," Marcus said, laying out a digital map of the European syndicate's known financial networks. "When the Valenti Syndicate fell, a power vacuum opened. The Lupos are using your father-in-law's old business connections to muscle their way onto the East Coast. They claim your father, Arthur Sterling, signed a secret collateral agreement twenty years ago."

Catherine stepped forward from the shadows of the warehouse, her expression fierce. She had refused to stay behind at the manor. "My father was a man of absolute integrity. He would never business with the mafia willingly."

"Willingly? No," Adrian said, turning to her. "But twenty years ago, the Sterling shipping lines suffered a massive financial collapse. Your father took a loan to save the family name. He thought he was dealing with a private bank, but it was a front for the Lupos. They didn't want the money back, Catherine. They wanted the deed to the land beneath Sterling Manor."

"Why the land?" she asked.

Marcus brought up an old architectural blueprint of Newport from the 1920s. "During Prohibition, the original Sterling Manor was built with a subterranean network of smuggling tunnels connecting the cellar directly to the ocean cliffs. The Valentis never found them because your father sealed them with concrete. But the Lupos know they're there. They don't want your fortune, Catherine. They want an untraceable, private smuggling route straight into the heart of the Northeast."
