Chapter 8 - Confrontation at the Gala

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of glittering diamonds, black tuxedos, and flowing silk. Dominic Valenti stood near the champagne fountain, holding a crystal flute and laughing with a pair of city councilmen. He was a broad-shouldered man in his late fifties, his face bearing the expensive marks of plastic surgery designed to hide a violent past.
"A toast," Valenti smiled, raising his glass. "To a safer, more prosperous New York."
Before his companions could drink, the heavy oak doors of the ballroom swung open.
The chatter in the room died down to a sudden, suffocating silence as a couple stepped onto the mezzanine overlooking the floor.
Adrian Kane looked impeccable in a custom-tailored midnight-blue tuxedo, his posture commanding and regal. But it wasn't Adrian who caused a collective gasp to ripple through the crowd.
It was the woman on his arm.
Catherine Sterling wore a breathtaking, floor-length sapphire silk gown that perfectly matched the color of her eyes. Her golden hair was swept up elegantly, exposing the flawless lines of her jaw and the faint, silver scar at the base of her neck. Around her neck hung a simple, priceless diamond necklace—the only piece of her mother's jewelry that had been stored in the Wall Street vault.
Valenti’s glass slipped from his fingers, shattering into a thousand pieces against the marble floor. His face went entirely gray, the flesh around his jaw twitching violently.
"Impossible," he muttered, his voice shaking. "She's dead. I burned..." He caught himself, but it was too late.
Adrian and Catherine descended the grand staircase with slow, measured steps, the crowd parting before them like the Red Sea.
"Dominic," Adrian said, his voice echoing clearly across the silent ballroom. "You look like you've seen a ghost."
"Kane," Valenti growled, stepping forward, his enforcers instinctively reaching into their jackets. "What is the meaning of this charade? Who is this impostor?"

Catherine stepped forward, leaving Adrian’s side. She looked directly into the eyes of the man who had haunted her nightmares for ten years.
"My name is Catherine Sterling, Dominic," she said, her voice ringing out with absolute clarity and authority. "And I have come to collect my father's debt."
