Chapter 2 - The New Rules

The changes began quietly.

Daniel asked Emily to make Vanessa breakfast. Then he told her which groceries to buy. By the afternoon, he had created a list of household responsibilities and taped it to the refrigerator.

Emily’s name appeared beside almost every task.

Cooking.

Cleaning.

Laundry.

Shopping.

Vanessa’s only responsibility was “finding herself.”

Emily pulled the paper from the refrigerator.

“What is this?”

Daniel looked up from his phone.

“A plan. Now that we’re married, the house needs structure.”

“We already had structure.”

“No, you had your way of doing things. Marriage means compromise.”

Emily examined the list again.

“Where is your name?”

“I handle the finances.”

The statement surprised her. Daniel had never handled her finances. They had opened one small joint account for household expenses, but Emily kept her savings, investments, and property records separate.

“We agreed to manage our own accounts,” she reminded him.

“That was before we were husband and wife.”

Vanessa walked into the kitchen wearing Emily’s blue cardigan.

“Daniel says you’re cooking chicken tonight.”

Emily stared at the cardigan.

“You went into my bedroom?”

Vanessa rolled her eyes. “It’s just a sweater.”

Daniel sighed as though Emily were embarrassing him.

“You need to stop treating Vanessa like a stranger.”

“She entered my bedroom without permission.”

“She’s family now.”

Emily looked from Daniel to Vanessa.

The two exchanged a glance that lasted only a second, but it felt rehearsed.

That evening, Emily quietly checked the lockbox in her home office.

Her property deed, financial documents, and prenuptial agreement were still inside.
