Chapter 24 - Two Versions of the Same Night
Security footage showed Olivia leaving the hotel at 3:12 a.m.
She wore a staff uniform and pushed a laundry cart through the service corridor. No one appeared to accompany her.
At 3:26, a vehicle registered to Northline entered the underground garage.
At 3:29, the vehicle left.
The camera angle did not reveal whether Olivia was inside.
Marcus insisted Olivia had planned the operation from the beginning.
Celia claimed Northline had only intervened after detecting Marcus’s fraudulent claim.
Olivia had accused Victor and Marcus.
Every person offered a version that made someone else responsible.
Rachel trusted none of them.
Tessa requested access to Olivia’s financial history. The forty-thousand-dollar payment from E.V. Consulting had been routed through four companies before reaching her account.
One company was registered to a post-office box.
That box had previously belonged to Rachel’s mother.
“It could have been used after her death,” Tessa said.
“Or before.”
The cybersecurity specialist recovered deleted audio from Marcus’s phone.
The recording had been made at Olivia’s apartment one week before the wedding.
Marcus’s voice was clear.
“Once her name is on the loan, Northline can take the rear parcel. We keep the settlement.”
Olivia replied, “You’re assuming Rachel won’t find the second record.”
“What second record?”
“The one her father hid.”
“So you knew about the ledger,” Rachel said.
Marcus stared at the speaker.
“I never heard this conversation.”
“That is your voice.”
“It’s assembled.”
Dr. Lena Cho analyzed the recording. Unlike the forged signature, the audio showed no obvious splicing.
Marcus continued denying it.
The second half of the recording was more disturbing.
Olivia said, “Celia thinks Rachel is Evelyn’s daughter.”
Marcus answered, “Isn’t she?”
“No. That’s what makes the house dangerous.”
A third voice spoke from farther away.
“Stop discussing the child.”
Rachel replayed the sentence.
The speaker sounded female.
Older.
Familiar.
She searched through family recordings until she found a birthday video from the year before her mother died.
She isolated her mother’s voice.
Tessa compared the two clips.
The rhythm was similar. The accent was identical. Even the slight breath before the word child matched.
But the wedding recording had been created years after her mother’s funeral.
Marcus stared at Rachel.
“That is the woman I saw.”
The interview-room door opened.
An officer entered with a sealed evidence bag recovered from Olivia’s hotel room.
Inside was the missing corner of the 2004 photograph.
It showed the person standing beside Rachel’s father.
The woman was not Rachel’s mother.
She was nearly identical to her.
And she was holding an infant.
