Chapter 26 - The Name Beneath the Ink

The video ended.
Emergency lights illuminated the room in a pale red glow.
Tessa tried the door while Nina called security. Her phone connected, but no one answered.
Rachel opened the box.
The sealed trust agreement contained twelve pages. The first eleven described the transfer of the land beneath Lot 46 into a protective family trust.
The beneficiary name on page twelve had been covered with heavy black ink.
Tessa held the page toward the emergency light.
“There may be writing underneath.”
Nina found an ultraviolet document scanner on a nearby desk.
Under the scanner, faded letters appeared beneath the ink.
ELEANOR ANNE VALE, OR HER SURVIVING BIOLOGICAL DESCENDANT.
Rachel read the sentence twice.
“If Eleanor died before I was born, who was her descendant?”
Tessa examined the date.
The trust had been created seventeen days after Rachel’s recorded birth.
Attached to the agreement was a medical certificate identifying an infant only as Female Child B.
The parents’ names had been removed.
A handwritten note appeared in the margin.
Evelyn insists the girls must be separated until source ledger is secure.
“Girls,” Rachel said.
Two infants.
One connected to Eleanor Vale.
One connected to Evelyn Bennett.
The video had asked which child survived.
The lights returned without warning.
The security door unlocked.
Harold Venn stood outside with two guards.
“You are in a restricted area,” he said.
Nina stepped forward.
“I authorized—”
“You don’t have authorization.”
Tessa held up the court order.
“We are preserving evidence relevant to an active proceeding.”
Venn’s attention moved to the trust agreement.
His calm expression disappeared.
He ordered the guards to remove it.
Tessa called the police.
For several seconds, no one moved.
Then Venn reached inside his jacket.
Rachel expected a weapon.
Instead, he removed an old photograph.
It showed two babies lying beside each other in identical hospital blankets.
One wore a bracelet marked RB.
The other wore a bracelet marked EV.
“Your father gave me this the night before he died,” Venn said. “He told me to destroy it.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“Because I wanted to know which one you were.”
Rachel studied the babies.
There were no visible differences except for a small dark mark near one infant’s wrist.
Rachel had the same mark.
It appeared beneath the bracelet labeled EV.
Before she could speak, Nina gasped.
A man stood at the end of the corridor.
Samuel Pike had been missing for days.
Now he held Olivia by the arm.

Olivia looked directly at Rachel.
“Don’t believe the photograph,” she said. “Your father changed the bracelets.”
