Chapter 3 - What Daniel Had Been Planning

Emily did not confront Daniel immediately.

Instead, she called her attorney, Rebecca Sloan, during her lunch break the next day.

Rebecca had prepared the prenuptial agreement before the wedding. Daniel had signed it after complaining for several weeks, but the document clearly stated that Emily’s house, savings, business investments, and future inheritance would remain her separate property.

“Has he asked you to change the deed?” Rebecca asked.

“Not directly.”

“Has anyone entered your office?”

“I think so.”

Rebecca became quiet.

“Check your accounts. Change your passwords. Do not tell him what you are doing.”

Emily’s stomach tightened.

“You think this is serious?”

“I think unexplained behavior becomes less confusing when money is involved.”

Emily checked the joint account.

Three thousand dollars had been transferred that morning.

The destination was an unfamiliar consulting company.

She searched the company’s name and found that it had been registered only two weeks earlier.

Its owner was Vanessa Carter.

Emily immediately called the bank and reported the transaction. Because the money had been transferred from the joint account, reversing it would require an investigation.

She then checked the home security application.

The cameras covered the driveway, front entrance, living room, and kitchen. Daniel had once insisted they install them after packages disappeared from nearby houses.

Emily opened footage from the previous evening.

At 1:14 in the morning, Daniel and Vanessa entered her home office.

The camera did not show the interior, but it recorded their conversation in the hallway.

“Once her name is removed, she can’t throw us out,” Vanessa whispered.

Daniel answered confidently.

“She won’t fight me. Emily always tries to keep the peace.”

“What about the agreement you signed?”

“I’ll convince her to cancel it.”

Emily replayed the conversation twice.

Then she downloaded the recording and sent it to Rebecca.

The woman she had been the day before might have cried.

The woman listening to the recording felt something colder.

Clarity.
