Chapter 7 - The Evidence on the Table
Rebecca filed for an annulment based on fraud, coercive conduct, and Daniel’s undisclosed financial scheme.
Daniel responded by claiming that Emily had misunderstood ordinary marital disagreements.
He said the money transferred to Vanessa’s company had been intended for home renovations.
The security footage proved otherwise.
During the legal meeting, Rebecca placed a laptop on the table and played the hallway recording.
Daniel’s own voice filled the room.
“Once her name is removed, she can’t throw us out.”
His attorney immediately asked for a private conversation.
Vanessa was questioned separately.
At first, she defended Daniel. Then Rebecca presented messages recovered from the family group chat.
Daniel had written that marrying Emily would finally give them access to “real security.”
He had promised Vanessa the guest room indefinitely and told her they could use Emily’s credit to launch a business.
Vanessa’s expression collapsed.
Daniel had also sent her a message saying that she would be responsible if the plan failed.
Realizing that her brother intended to blame her, Vanessa provided every message she had saved.
She admitted that the consulting company had no clients and no legitimate purpose. Daniel had created the transfer plan, while she had agreed to receive the money.
Emily listened without interrupting.
She felt no satisfaction in Vanessa’s fear, but she no longer felt responsible for rescuing her.
“You watched him treat me like I was less than a person,” Emily said. “You benefited from it until you became afraid he would do the same to you.”
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
