Chapter 30 - The Envelope Marked Rachel

Rachel could not speak.

The woman had Evelyn Bennett’s eyes, Evelyn Bennett’s mouth, and the small scar above the left eyebrow that Rachel remembered from childhood.

But her voice was not exactly the same.

It was deeper and steadier, without the warmth Rachel associated with her mother.

Tessa stepped forward.

“Identify yourself.”

The woman ignored her.

“You brought the police,” she said to Rachel. “Your father would have expected that.”

“My father is dead.”

“Yes.”

“Did you kill him?”

“No.”

“Were you there?”

The woman looked toward Olivia.

“We were all there in one way or another.”

Marcus stirred beside the vault. One officer checked his pulse and called for medical support.

Rachel lifted the sealed package from his chest.

“What is this?”

“The last document your father prepared.”

“Why did Marcus have it?”

“He stole it from Victor and came here to trade it for protection.”

“Protection from whom?”

“From the person who recruited him.”

Rachel glanced at Olivia.

Olivia’s face was pale.

“I didn’t recruit Marcus,” she said.

The woman smiled faintly.

“No. But you allowed everyone to believe you did.”

Water moved through the channels beneath the archive. Lights illuminated cabinet after cabinet, revealing thousands of sealed records.

The source ledger was not a single book.

It was an entire hidden history.

The woman approached the pressure vault.

“Your father built this place to ensure no company, court, or government official could erase the truth again. But he made one mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“He believed blood would determine who should control it.”

Rachel held up the photograph of the two babies.

“Which child am I?”

The woman studied the image.

“The bracelets were changed three times.”

“Am I Evelyn’s daughter?”

“That depends which Evelyn you mean.”

Tessa moved between them.

“Enough riddles. Police are searching the building. You will be detained unless you cooperate.”

“They are welcome to try.”

The woman pressed her ring against a sensor beside the vault.

A screen activated.

Two names appeared.

RACHEL ELAINE BENNETT

OLIVIA MARIE REID

Below them was a request:

SELECT SURVIVING BENEFICIARY.

Olivia stared at the screen.

“My mother told me only one name would appear.”

“Your mother lied,” the woman said.

Rachel examined the sealed package.

A thin wire extended from its lower corner into Marcus’s coat.

“Tessa.”

Tessa saw it too.

The package was connected to a recording device.

Marcus had not carried it merely to trade.

He had been documenting the meeting.

Rachel removed the recorder carefully. Its storage light continued blinking.

“Who is listening?” she asked.

The woman’s composure faltered for the first time.

A metallic sound echoed from the far end of the archive.

Someone had closed the entrance.

The police radios stopped working.

The floodwater began rising above the channels and spreading across the floor.

The screen changed.

REMOTE BENEFICIARY SELECTION INITIATED.

TIME REMAINING: 04:59.

“We need to leave,” one officer said.

The woman moved rapidly toward the control panel.

“That system was disconnected.”

“Apparently not,” Tessa replied.

Rachel tore open the sealed package.

It contained three items.

A train ticket issued in her mother’s name for the night after her funeral.

A keycard bearing the Northline emblem.

And an envelope marked:

RACHEL—READ ONLY WHEN YOU ARE STANDING BESIDE MY OTHER DAUGHTER.

Rachel looked at Olivia.

“Did you know about this?”

“No.”

The countdown reached four minutes.

Rachel opened the envelope.

Inside was a single handwritten page.

The first line read:

Rachel, the woman you called your mother did not die in the hospital.

The second line had been violently scratched out.

Below it, her father had written:

One daughter inherited Eleanor’s blood.

The other inherited Evelyn’s name.

Neither of you inherited the truth.

A loud impact shook the archive door.

Someone was attempting to enter from the tunnel.

The woman with the green ring moved toward a secondary exit.

Rachel caught her arm.

“Who are you?”

The woman looked down at Rachel’s hand.

Then she whispered a name.

Not Evelyn.

Not Eleanor.

A third name Rachel had never heard.

Before Rachel could ask what it meant, every light in House Zero went dark.

The countdown continued on the screen.

03:17.

03:16.

03:15.

In the darkness, Olivia screamed Rachel’s name.

A door opened somewhere behind the vault.

Footsteps entered the flooded archive.

Then a male voice spoke through the darkness.

“Neither of them is the beneficiary.”

Rachel recognized the voice immediately.

It belonged to the person who had pronounced her mother dead eleven years earlier.

The family doctor.

The screen flashed once more.

A third name appeared beneath Rachel’s and Olivia’s.

But before Rachel could read it, someone removed the source ledger from the system.

May you like

The screen went blank.

And the entire archive began to lock itself from the inside.
