Chapter 4 - Dinner Was Never About Dinner

Emily returned home expecting to confront Daniel calmly.
Instead, she found Vanessa sitting at the dining table while Daniel stood beside the counter with his arms crossed.
Dirty plates from breakfast remained on the table. Coffee had dried inside several cups. Food containers were scattered across the granite surface.
“Where’s dinner?” Daniel asked.
Emily placed her handbag on a chair.
“I just finished work.”
“I told you Vanessa wanted chicken.”
“Then one of you should cook it.”
Vanessa stared at her phone.
Daniel stepped closer.
“You knew what time we expected you.”
Emily almost laughed.
“You expected me?”
“You are my wife.”
“That does not make me your employee.”
Daniel’s face changed.
The polite expression he wore around friends disappeared. He began accusing Emily of disrespecting his family and humiliating him inside his own home.
Emily reminded him that she had purchased the house years before meeting him.
Daniel struck the counter with his palm.
Vanessa flinched but remained silent.
Emily felt a brief surge of fear. She also remembered Rebecca’s instructions.
Stay near a camera.
Keep your phone accessible.
Do not allow him to isolate you.
Emily moved toward the kitchen, deliberately placing herself beneath the security camera.
Daniel followed.
He ordered her to prepare food for Vanessa.
When Emily refused, he leaned closer and said she needed to learn how marriage worked.
The argument grew louder.
Then Daniel made the mistake that destroyed whatever remained of Emily’s trust.
He told her that obedience was the price of becoming part of his family.
Emily swept the stack of dirty dishes from the counter.

Plates spun through the air.
And the recording captured every word that followed.
