Chapter 6 - Vanessa Changes Sides

Back at the house, Daniel paced around the broken dishes.

Vanessa sat at the dining table, staring at the frozen banking application on her phone.

“The transfer disappeared,” she said.

Daniel grabbed his own phone.

The joint account displayed a zero available balance while the bank reviewed recent activity.

“What did she do?”

Vanessa’s confidence faded.

“You said she wouldn’t check.”

“She wasn’t supposed to.”

A notification appeared on Daniel’s screen.

Rebecca had sent formal instructions directing him not to remove, damage, or alter Emily’s property. The message also informed him that all security footage had been preserved.

Daniel looked toward the camera above the kitchen entrance.

The small blue light blinked.

Vanessa followed his gaze.

“You told me those cameras didn’t record sound.”

“I thought they didn’t.”

Vanessa stood abruptly.

“I’m not taking the blame for this.”

“You registered the company.”

“Because you told me to.”

“You wanted the money.”

“You said Emily would agree after the wedding.”

Their argument was still being recorded when two police officers arrived with Emily and Maya.

Daniel hurried to the front door.

“You brought police into our home?”

Emily remained behind the officers.

“It is my home.”

One officer explained that they were present to prevent conflict while Emily collected personal items. Daniel attempted to argue that marriage gave him ownership of the property.

Emily handed him a copy of the prenuptial agreement.

His face became pale as he reached the section concerning the house.

Vanessa read over his shoulder.

“You said she canceled this.”

Daniel said nothing.

Vanessa finally understood that Daniel had lied to both women.
