Chapter 9 - The Judgment
Three months later, the annulment hearing took place.
Daniel’s attorney attempted to negotiate a settlement, but Emily refused to pay him for leaving property he had never owned.
The evidence was direct.
The prenuptial agreement was valid.
The house belonged entirely to Emily.
The messages showed that Daniel had entered the marriage with a financial plan he had hidden from her.
The recordings showed his attempt to establish control immediately after the wedding.
The transferred money was returned after the bank’s investigation. Vanessa avoided harsher consequences by cooperating and repaying the small portion she had already spent.
Daniel was ordered to cover part of Emily’s legal costs.
He lost access to the house, the joint account, and every benefit he had expected to gain from the marriage.
Outside the courtroom, he approached Emily one last time.
“I did love you,” he said.
Emily studied the man she had nearly trusted with her future.
“Maybe you loved what you thought you could get from me.”
Daniel looked away.
His anger was gone. Without Emily’s home, money, and patience, he appeared smaller than she remembered.
“I made a mistake,” he whispered.
Emily thought of the broken dishes, the secret conversations, and the command that had revealed his true expectations.
“No,” she said. “You made a plan. Your mistake was believing I would remain silent.”
She walked down the courthouse steps without looking back.
