Chapter 11 - The Letter Beneath the Door
Eighteen months after Ethan Hayes died, Nora finally stopped waking every morning expecting to hear him making coffee downstairs.
The grief remained, but it had changed shape. It no longer filled every room. Now it lived quietly among Lily’s drawings on the refrigerator, Ethan’s watch in Nora’s bedside drawer, and the young maple tree they had planted together.
The house had become peaceful again.
Then, on a cold Monday morning, Nora discovered a thick silver envelope beneath the front door.
MERIDIAN CROWN DEVELOPMENT
The letter stated that Meridian intended to begin construction on a luxury residential community behind Nora’s property. According to its attorneys, the company owned an access road running directly through her backyard.
Nora read the sentence three times.
There was no road in her backyard.
Only Lily’s swing, a vegetable garden, and the stone wall Ethan had repaired two summers before his death.
The letter ordered Nora to remove all personal structures from the disputed land within thirty days.
At the bottom was a signature she recognized.
Mason Hayes.
Ethan’s older brother.
Nora had not spoken to Mason since the funeral. He had disappeared after asking several uncomfortable questions about Ethan’s insurance policy.
She called the number printed on the letter.
A receptionist answered.
“I need to speak with Mason Hayes.”
There was a pause.
“Mr. Hayes is Meridian Crown’s director of property acquisition.”
Nora tightened her grip on the phone.
“When did he begin working there?”
“Almost two years ago.”
Two years.
That meant Mason had joined the company six months before Ethan died.
That evening, Nora stood beside the stone wall and examined every inch of it. Near the ground, beneath a layer of ivy, she found a small brass plate.
It contained three engraved words.
THE LAND REMEMBERS.
Nora had never seen it before.
