Chapter 24 - The House Meridian Lost
The criminal case lasted seven months.
Helena Crown was convicted of conspiracy, fraud, evidence destruction, and bribery. Several executives received prison sentences or substantial penalties after entering guilty pleas.
Councilman Vale resigned before pleading guilty to corruption charges.
Mason received a reduced sentence because of his cooperation, but he was ordered to pay restitution and permanently barred from working in property acquisition or serving as a trustee.
Meridian Crown Development was dissolved.
Its remaining assets were placed under court supervision.
Priya filed claims for the families who had been pressured into selling their homes. Some recovered their properties. Others received compensation based on the true value of their land.
Walter Reed returned to his old farm for the first time in three years.
The new owners agreed to sell it back after learning how Meridian had obtained it.
Nora stood beside him as he opened the barn.
“I thought I would never see this place again,” Walter said.
“Ethan believed you would.”
The state offered Nora millions for permanent access to the underground water source.
She agreed on three conditions.
The water could be used only for public needs.
No private company could control it.
A portion of the revenue would support families facing fraudulent property claims.
The agreement was approved.
Nora did not become enormously wealthy overnight. Most of the funds remained inside Lily’s protected trust.
But the mortgage disappeared. Lily’s education was secured. The property could never be sold without strict independent review.
One afternoon, Nora stood outside as workers removed Meridian’s construction signs.
The largest sign fell into the grass.
Lily pointed at it.
“Is the bad company gone?”
“Yes.”
“Can they take our house?”
