Chapter 2 - The Family Claim

The pressure began quietly.
Her mother called every morning and asked whether Claire had reviewed the house documents. Tyler sent listings for cheap apartments near his neighborhood.
Then the language changed.
“Our family needs to make a decision.”
“You cannot keep a four-bedroom house for one woman and a baby.”
“Daniel would not want you struggling.”
Claire finally asked the question they kept avoiding.
“What exactly do you want?”
Her mother answered without hesitation.
Tyler would move into the downstairs bedroom. She would take the room beside the nursery. Claire could remain upstairs “until she became stable.”
It sounded less like help and more like an eviction plan.
Claire refused.
Her mother’s voice turned cold. “After everything I did for you?”
Claire remembered what that phrase had meant throughout childhood. It meant obedience. It meant surrender. It meant every gift would eventually become a debt.
When Claire was seventeen, her mother had taken the money Claire earned from a summer job and used it to cover Tyler’s car repair. When Claire protested, she had been called selfish.
Tyler had always needed rescuing.
Claire had always been expected to provide it.
