Chapter 18 - The Recording in the Clock
The coordinates led to the former Hayes farm office, which Meridian had converted into a polished glass headquarters.
Nora could not enter without permission.
Walter, however, remembered that the original building contained a basement archive accessible through an exterior maintenance door.
Priya obtained a court order preventing Meridian from destroying or moving records related to the disputed property. Investigators entered the building the next morning.
Inside the basement, they found empty filing cabinets.
Someone had removed everything.
But an old wooden clock remained mounted above the archive door.
Walter recognized it.
“That clock belonged to Ethan’s great-grandmother.”
An investigator lifted it from the wall.
A memory card fell from the back.
The recording showed Mason and two Meridian executives meeting inside the archive eighteen months earlier.
Their voices were clear.
They discussed altering historic surveys, creating false access agreements, and pressuring vulnerable homeowners to sell.
Then Mason placed Ethan’s red notebook on the table.
“My brother has copies,” Mason said.
One executive leaned forward.
“Can he be controlled?”
“He has a wife and a baby. He will choose them over a fight.”
“What if he doesn’t?”
Mason looked toward the camera without realizing it was there.
“Then we make sure no one believes him.”
The recording did not prove anyone had caused Ethan’s death. His medical records still confirmed a natural heart condition.
But it proved Mason had known about Ethan’s investigation and had participated in the fraud.
It also revealed something unexpected.
The third executive at the table was not employed by Meridian.
