Chapter 30 - The Woman in the Blue Coat

The sedan remained outside until sunset.

The next morning, it was gone.

In its place stood an elderly woman wearing a blue wool coat.

She waited beyond the gate without knocking.

When Nora approached, the woman lifted both hands to show she carried no weapon.

“My name is Ruth Carter,” she said. “Helen Carter was my sister.”

Nora opened the gate.

Ruth refused to enter the house.

“She used to say the walls listened.”

She had seen the news about the attempted demolition and believed Nora must have discovered something hidden at Briarwood.

Nora showed her a copy of the photograph.

Ruth touched Helen’s crossed-out face.

“My sister did not disappear.”

For thirty-five years, Ruth had allowed everyone to believe that Helen had run away after stealing money from the cooperative.

The truth was more complicated.

Helen had discovered Lydia Harrow meeting secretly with Charles’s father. She photographed them exchanging documents and money.

A week later, Helen’s car was found beside a river.

No body was recovered.

Ruth received a telephone call the following night.

Helen was alive but terrified. She planned to leave the state and promised to contact Ruth when it was safe.

She never did.

“Why didn’t you tell the police?” Nora asked.

“I did. The officer who took my statement was Elias Harrow’s uncle.”

Ruth removed a small cassette tape from her coat pocket.

Helen had mailed it one day before disappearing.

Ruth had hidden it because the recording named powerful people. She had waited for someone with enough legal protection to use it.

Camille found an old cassette player in the basement.

Helen’s frightened voice filled the kitchen.

She described the forged deed, the changed survey and payments made to county officials.

Then another voice entered the recording.

Lydia Harrow said, “Once the houses are built, no judge will make families leave. The theft will become permanent.”

The tape ended with a door slamming.

Ruth stared toward the hallway.

“There is something else,” she said.

Helen had not been alone when she disappeared.

She had taken her four-year-old son.

His name was Gabriel.

The cooperative records listed no child, but Ruth carried a birth certificate.

The father’s name had been left blank.

Nora noticed the date of birth.

Gabriel Carter would now be the same age as Commissioner Elias Harrow.
