Chapter 7 - The Trap

Marlene advised Claire not to confront them.

Instead, they created a trap.

The county fraud unit flagged the planned filing but allowed the submission attempt to proceed so investigators could identify everyone involved.

Claire’s mother called Sunday night.

Her tone was warm again.

“We should stop fighting.”

Claire looked at Marlene, who sat across the kitchen table taking notes.

“What do you suggest?” Claire asked.

“We are coming tomorrow. Just family. We can talk calmly.”

“With luggage?”

Silence.

Then her mother laughed. “Only a few things. Tyler’s lease ended unexpectedly.”

Claire understood. They planned to establish residence inside the house before the forged transfer was challenged. Once inside, they could create confusion, claim consent, and make removal harder.

Marlene wrote one sentence on her notepad and turned it toward Claire.

Let them state their intentions clearly.

Claire swallowed.

“Come at ten,” she said.

After the call, fear rose through her.

“What if they take Ava?”

“They will not,” Marlene said. “I will be here. The police will be nearby. The locks, trust, recordings, and filings are all documented.”

Claire looked toward the nursery.

“I spent my whole life giving in before things became ugly.”

Marlene closed the folder.

“Then tomorrow is not only about the house.”

May you like

Claire nodded.

It was about teaching her family that no finally meant no.
