Chapter 19 - The Hearing That Changed Direction
The town planning hearing was scheduled for Friday evening.
Meridian expected routine approval.
Instead, the meeting room filled with residents, reporters, attorneys, and investigators.
Councilman Vale entered through a side door. When he saw Nora seated beside Priya and Evelyn, he stopped walking.
Meridian’s chief attorney presented first.
He described the development as an economic opportunity. It would create jobs, increase tax revenue, and provide luxury housing.
Then Priya stood.
She introduced the trust certificate establishing Lily as the lawful beneficiary of the farmhouse and its natural resources.
The attorney objected.
Priya introduced the forensic report proving Nora’s signature had been forged.
Then she played the recording from the clock.
Silence spread across the room.
Vale’s own voice discussed altering property surveys and accelerating approvals before residents could organize.
The audience erupted.
Vale attempted to leave, but two state investigators were waiting near the exit.
Meridian’s attorney requested an immediate recess.
Nora asked permission to address the committee.
She stood at the microphone holding Lily’s music box.
“My husband hid the original certificate inside this because he knew the people threatening us would never value something made for a child.”
She looked toward Mason, who sat behind Meridian’s executives.
“They believed widows, elderly homeowners, and struggling families would be easy to frighten.”
Mason stared at the floor.
“They were wrong.”
The committee suspended Meridian’s project unanimously.
Outside the building, reporters surrounded Nora.
One asked whether she planned to sell the water rights to another company.
Nora looked directly into the camera.
