Chapter 34 - The Camera Above the Bed

Nora ran into Elsie’s room.

Her daughter was safe, sleeping beneath a yellow quilt. Ruth sat in a chair near the door, and the security officers remained downstairs.

The photograph had been taken through the window.

Nora searched the garden with a flashlight but found no footprints. Whoever had taken it had used a long-range camera from beyond the property line.

For the first time, she considered surrendering the evidence.

She could replace land.

She could not replace her child.

Camille understood but warned that silence would not protect them permanently. The people responsible had already attempted demolition, surveillance and arson.

“They don’t want you quiet for one day,” she said. “They want you powerless forever.”

Harrow offered to cancel the press conference and resign privately.

Nora looked toward Elsie’s room.

“No. We change the location.”

The following morning, reporters gathered outside the county building as scheduled.

Harrow never appeared.

Instead, he spoke through a live broadcast from Briarwood’s library. State investigators, invited secretly by Camille, stood behind the cameras.

Harrow introduced himself as Gabriel Carter.

He described how Lydia had raised him under her dead son’s identity, concealed his mother’s confinement and used his position to protect property fraud he did not understand.

Then he released the surviving documents.

The broadcast reached thousands before anyone could stop it.

Within an hour, the governor’s office suspended Harrow from official duties pending investigation.

By noon, the detective who questioned Nora after the fire had been removed from the case.

At two, a federal property crimes unit arrived at Briarwood.

At four, the county announced that all demolition orders connected to Harrow Holdings were frozen.

Nora felt the first small movement of relief.

Then Beatrice Whitmore appeared at the gate.

She had not contacted Nora since losing the previous court battle.

Her expensive coat was wrinkled. Her face looked older.

“I know who threatened Elsie,” she said.

Nora did not open the gate.

Beatrice lifted a leather folder.

“It was not the Harrows.”

She slid the folder between the iron bars.

Inside was a photograph of Charles Whitmore with three executives from Meridian Crown Properties.

One of them was Beatrice’s brother, Richard Vale.

“This was never about one house,” Beatrice said. “My family has been stealing land for forty years.”
